ARUM IMPRESSED BY GONZALES PhilBoxing.com Sun, 06 Jul 2008 Las Vegas, Nevada - With his right foot still in plaster cast, Top Rank's top man Bob Arum limped into the boxing arena of the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino early today, something which he does not usually do. But it was obvious that he arrived early to take a look at one of his two newest recruits from the Philippines, featherweight prospect Glenn Gonzales, who was appearing in the third fight in the "No Excuse" card that featured the return match between World Boxing Organization (WBO) jr. welterweight champion Ricardo Torres and challenger Kendal Holt. After Gonzales scored a unanimous victory over Rhode Island, New York's Robert DaLuz in a bloody six round bout, Arum expressed delight at his new recruit's performance and said: "He looks good." Arum was not the only person at ringside who was impressed by Gonzales gallant performance. Boxing writers were unanimous in their assessment that the Filipino boxing prospect from M'lang, North Cotabato showed a lot of heart in his fight against the veteran DaLuz. "I like his style and he has a lot of heart," said Pete Allman, correspondent of CelebrityScene.com, one of the boxing writers who was at ringside. Gonzales, 22, started well in the first round but suffered a big cut in the 2nd round following a clash of heads. His cornermen, Nonito Donaire Sr., Noli Pinol and Josh Sanchez succeeded in stopping the bleeding and Gonzales went back to work again punishing the New Yorker with punches to the body. Another clash of heads in the 5th round, however, caused another cut over the right eye, this time bigger than the first. "It was big and I was not able to really stop the bleeding," Donaire, father of world flyweight champion Nonito Jr., said after the fight. Glenn had to be brought to the hospital by ambulance after the fight to be attended by doctors who sutured the big cuts over his right eye. But in spite of the wounds which bled profusely from 2nd round on, Gonzales was in complete control of the fight early a 60-54 score in the card of judge Ricardo Ocasio while the two other judges CJ Ross and Paul Smith gave the fight to Glenn with scores of 59-55, giving only 1 round to DaLuz. He improved his record to 7 wins (4 KOs) and 1 draw. "He is not in the best of shape yet," said trainer Noli Pinol who confided that shortly before the fight, Glenn contracted conjunctivitis (sore eyes) which was immediately cured with the help of doctors. That and his year-long lay-off, prevented Glenn from living up to his monicker "Rapid Fire." He almost sent DaLuz to the canvas in the 5th round following a barrage of punches in the body but failed to follow up as he was conserving his energy for the last round. Glenn's victory and the good impression he made on Arum and the boxing writers, has virtually opened the door for the other young boxers from North Cotabato and the rest of Mindanao. Gonzales and his teammate, bantamweight Jundy Maraon, 23, (10 wins (8 KOs) 1 draw) are expected to see action in September. They are now based in Salinas City, California. Other Braveheart Boxing Club boxers who are waiting for their turn to take the trip to the US are bantamweight Glenn Porras, 23, (14 wins, 2 losses, 8 KOs), Edrin Dapudong, 22, (14 wins, 2 losses, 8 KOs), jr. featherweight Reynaldo Belandres, 21, (8 wins, No loss, 6 KOs), Lorenzo Villanueva, 20, (8 wins, No Loss, 8 KOs) and Rolando Magbanua, 22, (8 wins, No loss, 4 KOs). |
