Magdalena Contreras Municipality and WBC start "Boxing for Peace" in Mexico By Gabriel F. Cordero PhilBoxing.com Wed, 25 Feb 2026 ![]() The Magdalena Contreras borough is the first municipality in Mexico to implement the newly launched "Boxing for Peace" program, a recognized strategy of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo in coordination with the World Boxing Council (WBC). This initiative aims to address the root causes of insecurity, and the opening of six free boxing schools has been announced during the traditional "Coffee Tuesdays" events. These schools offer modern equipment, certified trainers, and comprehensive physical, emotional, and nutritional support for children, teenagers, and adults, including people with disabilities. This positions La Magdalena Contreras as a key player in crime prevention and peace efforts, not only in Mexico City but throughout the country. This responsibility has been embraced by Mayor Fernando Mercado Guaida in conjunction with WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman. The "Boxing for Peace" project was launched on February 16th by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and the World Boxing Council (WBC). Its mission is to strengthen values and rebuild social peace, especially among children and young people. “Magdalena Contreras wants to be the municipality in the country with the most boxers, the most public spaces, and where boxing is a strategy for building peace and a better future for these generations who seek to avoid falling into the hands of crime,” said Mayor Fernando Mercado Guaida. The project has the main participation of the World Boxing Council and its president, Mauricio Sulaimán, for the development of sports and social inclusion in the Magdalena Contreras district and the rest of the country. “Boxing for Peace,” together with the Magdalena Contreras mayor's office, seeks to pave the way through sports as one of the most powerful tools for building a better society. Boxing is Mexico's world-renowned sport,” said Sulaimán. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Gabriel F. Cordero. |
