Cavite beats San Juan and Pasig in PCAP

PhilBoxing.com

THE AQ Prime Cavite Spartans showed no mercy and pounced on the San Juan Predators and Pasig City King Pirates in another scheduled game day of the 2025 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Online Chess Team Tournament, held through the Chess.com Platform on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

The Atty. Aldwin Alegre-backed AQ Prime Cavite Spartans took down San Juan, 11-10, and decimated Pasig, 11-10.

After a slow start in the Blitz category, Cavite received a closer fight from San Juan that turned the rapid category into a nip-and-tuck affair.

Alexis Emil Maribao was clutch with a draw versus Julius Gonzales on board seven, which sealed the 11-10 win of Cavite versus San Juan.

Other players who gave a good fight for Cavite were GM Darwin Laylo, NM Alexander Lupian, IM Michael Concio Jr., and FM Roel Abelgas.

Laylo won by default against GM Rogelio Barcenilla on board one, Lupian beat IM Ricardo de Guzman on board four, Concio dismantled IM Rolando Nolte on board five, and FM Abelgas settled for a draw against Narquinden Reyes on board six.

Meanwhile, Karl Victor Ochoa and WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda won their respective matches to power San Juan.

Ochoa nipped FM Bob Jones Liwagon on board two, while Fronda toppled WIM Kylen Joy Mordido on board three.

Cavite lost to San Juan in the Blitz competition, 3-4, but prevailed in the Rapid play, 8-6.

In another hairline victory of Cavite against Pasig, Cavite banked on a signature comeback in the rapid play courtesy of Mordido, Lupian, Abelgas, and Concio.

Mordido defeated WFM Sherily Cua on board three, Lupian beat IM Petronio Roca on board four, Abelgas routed Marc Kevin Labog on board six, and Concio subdued Kevin Arquero on board seven.

Pasig, on the other hand, relied on the service of Sherwin Tiu, IM Idelfonso Datu, and Jerome Villanueva.

Tiu upset Laylo on board one, Datu nipped Liwagon on board two, and Villanueva crushed Maribao on board five.

Cavite beat Pasig, 8-6, in the rapid competition. Earlier, Pasig won 4-3 against Cavite.

"It was an intense and close match against San Juan and Pasig. Good thing we recovered in the rapid play," said Maribao. -Marlon Bernardino-
