Asuela wins Gomez Jr. Birthday Chess Cup

FM Ellan Asuela of Bacolod City ruled the Atty. Nicolas Gomez Jr. Birthday Chess Cup 2024 Open held April 28 at the Robinson’s Plaza in Valencia City.
Asuela defeated Valencia’s Ronnie Pujas in the 7th and final round to tally 6.5 points and earned P10,000 cash.
Asuela earlier beat Raymond Tangcawan, Ronnel Rempohito, Alit Cantorios and Basilio Pandan in the first four rounds.
Asuela then thumped Arca in the 5th round.
He settled a draw with Jeriel Manlimbana of Malaybalay in a penultimate round.
Manlibana crushed Basilio Pandan in the final round to finish second with 6.0 points and received P7,000.
FM Christian Gian Karlo Arca of Panabo City beat Alji Cantonjos while Bryan Jose of Talakag stunned Rodney Opada to both tally 5.5 points.
But Arca got the better quotient to earn 3rd place and P5,000 while Jose got 4th place and P3,000.
The 5th to 10th placers: Ronnie Pujas, Basilio Pandan Jr., Johnnel Balquin, Clement Valledor, Ronnel Rempohito [5.0], Alji Cantojos and Keith Adriane Ilar [4.0].
Meanwhile, Clint Borres of Misamis Oriental won the Under 16 category with a better quotient against three players with similar 7.0 points.
Borres got P7,000 while Karl Augusto Xander Sayson, Gemar Agosto and Sebastian Damonson received P5,000, P3,000 and P1,000 respectively.
Securing 5th to 10th placers were Gabriel Ryan Paradero, Jeshua Lagunay, Paulo Castino, Junlee Aklan, Kassandra Day Tadeo and Bea Comangking.
The tournament was sponsored by the Gomez Family.
