The Best Of Both Worlds: Yoel Angeloni Combines Cuban Boxing With Italian Experience

PhilBoxing.com

Yoel Angeloni is an Italian boxer who spent his formative years in Cuba.

He fights Michael Williams on April 10, on Wednesday Night Fights from Plant City, Florida, live on ProBox TV.

The 20-year-old welterweight (2-0, 1 KO) turned professional in 2022 – on the undercard of the first fight between George Kambosos Jr and Devin Haney, in Melbourne, Australia. He has since fought only once, in March 2023, when he followed his victory over Ken Aitken with another over Alexander Calixto.

Angeloni, who is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, is looking to stay active after the “best training camp of his life”. Williams (2-1, 1 KO), incidentally, is returning to the ring for the first time since 2019.

“As of right now, I see my career as a new era, a new adventure and a new career,” Angeloni told BoxingScene via a translator. “We have had a great camp, and it has been long since I have been here, and I am hoping to put on a great show for my people.”

Angeloni trains with Jorge Capetillo at his gym in Las Vegas, but he is a true citizen of the world. Born in Rome, Italy, he also spent a large period of his youth in Cuba, where he learned to box.

“I was born in Italy; when I was three-years-old I [moved] to Cuba,” he reflected. “From three until 14 years of age I was in Cuba. That is where I did most of my work either boxing or school. I was on the Cuban national team.

“At the age of 14 is when I moved to Italy, and I won my European championship out there.”

Angeloni had an impressive resume in the amateurs – 140 wins, with only 2 losses, according to the fighter himself. After traveling the world as an amateur, his past reflected his present. After making his professional debut in Australia he then fought in Canada. His third professional fight will be in the U.S.

“When I decided to go pro it was a dream come true,” he reflected. “In my past fights, I have never had a fight like I had for this fight. I have had a great camp, a long camp, and for this fight you are going to see a different Yoel Angeloni.”

A life goal is to fight in Rome. The Italian capital has staged some good regional fights, but Angeloni wants to bring a big fight back to his native land.

“I would love to bring a championship back to Italy,” he stated. “Maybe even a title fight in my hometown of Rome in front of my people and put on a great show.”
