MALCOLM TU?ACAO RETURNS PhilBoxing.com Fri, 09 May 2008 From 2002 through 2006, the Oriental & Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) divisions were swept by three Filipino warriors came to be known as ?The Golden Boys of Cebu Boxing.? These conquerors were Randy Suico, Rev Santillan, and Malcom Tu?acao. Suico ruled the super featherweight division in 2002 and proceeded to extend his dominance to the lightweight ranks in 2006. Santillan ruled the welterweight division since 1999. Tu?acao took over the bantamweight scepter in 2006. However, it was Tu?acao who achieved the distinctive honor of being the only Filipino world boxing champion in the year 2000 when he destroyed reigning WBC flyweight champion Medgoen Singsurat on May 19 at the age of only 23, after only 11 fights and 21 months as a professional fighter. Three years later, he stopped Ringgo Jaguar in five rounds to win the vacant WBC international super flyweight title after being dethroned as the world champion in the flyweight division. Known by the moniker ?Eagle Eye? because of his sharp eye contact, Tu?acao started donning boxing gloves in 1986 at the age of 9 under the watchful eyes of boxing patron Antonio ?Tony? Aldeguer of the fabled ALA Gym-Nasipit. He joined the fold with his brother Noel Tu?acao as amateur boxers with eyes set on a promising future. Malcolm grew into the most be-medaled amateur boxer of the ALA fold at that time, and became several times amateur champion. He became a member of the Philippine boxing team but then left having decided to turn pro. A father of three and in urgent need for a sustainable source of income, Malcolm turned pro on Aug 1, 1988 at a time when ALA Gym focused only on handling amateur boxers forcing him to move outside the camp to the RWS fold where he later became a world champion. And the rest was history of a warrior?s ups and downs. Suffering from a serious wrist injury, Malcolm lost the OPBF bantamweight crown to Japanese contender Rolly Matsushita. The damage forced him to stall his dreams and left the boxing scene for more than a year. But a warrior?s spirit could not be tamed. Not that easily. And Malcolm Tu?acao rose once again to continue his journey from where he left off. This time he will be facing Tanzanian Professional Boxing Commission bantamweight champion Rahid Ally. His comeback vehicle, One More Time, will hit Cebu City on May 31 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino in Lahug. |
