GORRES RETURNS ON MAY 31 TU?ACAO ALSO SEES ACTION IN UNDERCARD PhilBoxing.com Wed, 07 May 2008 ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer confirms the explosion of a cross-organizational encounter on May 31 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino. The event top-billed as ?One More Time? will once again bring in the main card reigning IBF Intercontinental champion Z ?The Dream? Gorres against reigning Universal Boxing Organization (UBO) king Nick ?Kanyankole? Otieno. Gorres, fresh from his capture of the IBF title last year and a controversial draw in the IBF super flyweight eliminator against Vic Darchinyan on Feb 2, has been earlier set for his first title defense against Francis Miyeyusho while waiting for the outcome of the IBF super flyweight title fight between reigning Dimitri Kirilov and challenger Darchinyan. The defeat of Miyeyusho in the hands of Otieno on Apr 5 placed Otieno in line to face him for the May-ending blast off. Otieno is a fast-rising warrior from Kenya who successfully defended his rule over the UBO bantamweight division on Mar 3, stopped in the first round reigning African Boxing Union (ABU) Francis Matthew on Apr 10, and defeated Miyeyusho on Apr 5. His victories earned him the chance to face IBF No. 4 world rated Gorres and a shot into the international market. If he wins over Gorres, Otieno can expect to break into the more lucrative American professional arena. Also in the main card, former WBC super flyweight champion Malcolm ?Eagle Eye? will see action against reigning Tanzania Professional Boxing Commission (TPBC) bantamweight boss Rashid Ally. In a pro-boxing career of 10 years and 26 fights, Tu?acao was the most be-medaled amateur boxer in Cebu City in his time before he barged into the professional scene with a second round TKO of fellow starter Manuel Ferego in 1998. He rose in a year to capture the Philippine flyweight title in 1999 followed by a snatch of the WBC flyweight crown a year later. He pushed up his stake and took over the vacant WBC international super flyweight division in 2003. He went on to dominate the OPBF bantamweight division in Nov 2005. His career took a lull in 2007 as he let his injured hands time to heal. This May outing is expected to be his come-back match against the formidable TPBC champion who remained unchallenged for his rule of more than a year now. Once again, he is pressing his battles forward, one more time for a chance and a place in world boxing history. The weekend explosive will feature the rivalry for the vacant WBO Youth lightweight title between Jason Pagara of Cagayan de Oro City and Heri Andriyanto of Jakarta, Indonesia. A special attraction bout between Juan Miguel Elorde of Manila and Racem Laud of Bacolod City is expected to spice up one more time these warriors? bid for boxing stardom. |
