PECANTE WINS 4 GOLDS, SMASHES RECORD IN ASIAN POWERLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIP By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 07 May 2008 Power lifting world record holder Elina ?Lily? Pecante has won four gold medals in the 2008 Asian Power-lifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in the process smashing the Asian Masters record in the bench press of 125 kilograms or an incredible 275 pounds. A jubilant Pecante relayed the good news by text and said she is returning home on Sunday. The postmaster of the Pasig Central Post Office, Pecante has served the Philippine Postal Corporation (PhilPost) for 25 years and was among twelve Filipino power-lifters who competed in the annual event organized by the Asian Powerlifting Federation. Pecante who was the prestigious Philippine Sportswriters Association 2007 awardee for Powerlifting said prior to leaving for Tashkent, ?I?m happy to be a part of this competition because its an opportunity to represent our country in a prestigious tournament.? She competed in the squat, bench press and dead lift categories in which some 300 powerlifters from 24 countries saw action.l compete. Pecante?s last triumph was when she won the 16th World Masters Powerlifting Championship held in Ostrava, Czech Republic where the postmaster broke the world record in squat by lifting 210 kilograms. She is the country?s most be-medaled powerlifter having won over 20 g old medals in local and international competitions with twelve of the golds earned at the fiercely competitive World Masters. Pecante has been hailed as the strongest woman in the squat event of all -time for lifting 490 pounds, strongest in bench press for lifting 270 pounds and strongest in dead lift for lifting 474 pounds. Among her many accolades is the recognition of Pecante as the strongest woman in the Philippines for lifting a total of 1,187 pounds in the gym while no other woman lifter in the gym has lifted more than 900 pounds. Pecante?s activities have the full support of the Philippine Postal Corporation headed by Postmaster General Hector Villanueva because she brings honor and pride to the country through her outstanding performances in tough world competitions. She was one of ten Outstanding Postal Workers in 2004 and had been honored by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo at Malacanang.
