SHOWTIME SPORTS® RELEASES MAIN-EVENT FEATURE HIGHLIGHTING MARK MAGSAYO AND REY VARGAS AHEAD OF THEIR WBC FEATHERWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWDOWN ON SHOWTIME®

PhilBoxing.com

Features To Air Tonight/Saturday, July 9 On SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® Telecast

WHAT: SHOWTIME SPORTS has released a video feature highlighting the main event competitors of tonight’s SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, WBC Featherweight World Champion Mark Magsayo and unbeaten former world champion Rey Vargas, in advance of their clash on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT) from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

Watch:

The Pride of The Philippines, Magsayo returned home to Tagbilaran City, Bohol in the Philippines, to a heroes’ welcome in January after dethroning the longest-reigning world champion in boxing – Gary Russell, Jr. Just as popular in his hometown of Otumba, México, Vargas also carries the hopes of his country on his back as he vies to regain world championship status in a second weight class after holding the 122-pound crown for four years on Saturday’s SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast.

Following his Olympic journey and decision to turn pro, Vargas talks about the move to have his 85-year-old trainer and father Carlos Vargas work along Hall of Fame trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain on his training. The 82-year-old Beristain, who has been friends with Carlos since childhood, describes him as a “savvy wolf.”

The ultra-confident Magsayo is out to prove there is no one who can stop him at 126 pounds. “I’m going to show [Vargas] he has no place in my division,” Magsayo said. “I’m going to show him who’s the real world champion.”

The night of fights will also mark the return of hard-hitting former world champion Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa as he takes on Carlos Castro in a WBC Featherweight Title Eliminator in the co-main event, plus unbeaten lightweight contender Frank Martin and Dominican Republic’s Jackson Mariñez battle in a 10-round super lightweight SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast opener.

Additional coverage will include a pair of bouts streamed live on the SHOWTIME SPORTS YouTube channel beginning at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. The action will see unbeaten welterweight contender Rashidi Ellis back in action, plus San Antonio’s own Ramon Cardenas battling Venezuela’s Michell Banquez in a 10-round bantamweight attraction.
