NM Cu rules national age-group chess tourney

MANILA---San Juan City bet National Master Ivan Travis Cu topped the Open 14-under division of the 2022 National Age Group Chess Championship Semifinals U14 Open virtually held at Tornelo Platform Sunday, May 29, 2022.
The 13-year-old Cu, an incoming Grade 8 pupil of Xavier School piled up victories in the stretch to finish undefeated in 7 games, spiked by 6.5 points on account of 6 wins and 1 draw and snare the crown in this 2-day event (May 28 and 29, 2022) using the 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment time control format.
Cu scored victories over Jian Carlo Rivera in the second round, Nathan Jon Anarna in the third round, Jaymiel Piel in the fourth round, Gladimir Chester Romero in the fifth round, National Master Gian Christian Karlo Arca in the sixth round and Tyrhhone James Tabernilla in the seventh and final round.
He split the point with Gabriel Ryan Paradero in the first round.
"Congratulations to NM Ivan Travis Cu, for topping the Under-14 Open Division of the ASEAN Age Group Chess Championship Zone 3.3. This comes right after his Gold medal performance in the board 1 of the Asian Nations Cup Online U14 Chess Team Championship just last month (March 25 to 27, 2022)," said proud father Mr. Teddy Cu.

We would also like to commend NM Ivan for his hard work and humility in sticking to his daily training regimen.
