Arca stuns English GM, maintains share of top spot in Bangkok Chess Open

Bangkok, Thailand ---Teen sensation FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Tade Arca continues his Cinderella run story in the ongoing 22nd Bangkok Chess Club Open Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Riverside Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.
The 16-year-old Panabo City, Davao del Norte ace defeated Grandmaster Stephen Gordon of England in 40 moves of Slav Chebanenko using the black pieces to score 4.0 points in four outings and create a three-way tie for first place along with GM Babu MR Lalith of India and IM Arif Abdul Hafiz of Indonesia.
Lalith beat FM Alexander Chernyavsky of Russia while Hafiz toppled GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy of Ukraine.
"Mahirap ang laro buti naging matatag ako hangang sa bandang huli," said Arca, who brought down the top seed Super GM Jan Gustafsson of Germany in Tuesday's third round.
International Master Paolo Bersamina split the point with Grandmaster Evgeny Romanov of Macedonia in 39 moves of Sicilian defense Rosolimo variation while International Master Michael Concio Jr. halved the point with Grandmaster Surya Shekhar Ganguly of India in 48 moves of Kings Pawn Opening to score 3.5 points in four outings.
The other players who got 3.5 points each were Romamov, Ganguly, Wei Yuyang of China, Tahmoores Baardeh of Iran, IM Prin Laohawirapap of Thailand, James Morris of England, GM Nigel Short of England, GM Jozsef Horvath of Hungary, GM Tomas Kraus of Czech Republic, IM Soozankar A.M. of Iran and Arsens Batashevs of Latvia.
In the Challenger section, John Paul De Guzman subdued Nikolay Gutsulyak of Russia to score his fourth consecutive win. Also with 4.0 points were Remark Bartolome and Nguyen Dang Khoa Tran of Vietnam.-Marlon Bernardino-
