SPORTS SHORTS 261: JOHN RIEL CASIMERO, DONNIE NIETES AND JAYSON MAMA WILL HEADLINE PROBELLUM INAUGURAL EVENT IN DUBAI ON DECEMBER 11

PhilBoxing.com

Three Filipinos, John Riel Casimero, Donnie Nietes, and Jayson Mama will banner the inaugural event of Probellum promotions outfit on December 11 at Coca-Cola Stadium in Dubai. United Arab Emirates.

Casimero defends his WBO bantamweight title against Englishman Paul Butler. Nietes aims to show an impressive victory against WBA world-ranked Norbelto "Meneito" Jiménez of Dominican Republic, that would catapult him to a world title shot, as reported by Carlos Costa.

Mama challenges Sunny Edwards for the IBF flyweight title belt in the event named “Probellum: Revolution.”

“We are delighted to finally announce plans for this incredible event in Dubai next month,” announced Richard Schaefer, President of Probellum. “We made it clear from the offset that we have massive plans in store for Probellum, and this world title double-header shows just that."

* * *

“The two world title fights see John Riel Casimero face Paul Butler, while Sunny Edwards takes on Jayson Mama, and both of those bouts are set to be guaranteed excitement. With the likes of Donnie Nietes, Archie Sharp and Jono Carroll all competing too, fans will be treated to a night of non-stop action."

* * *

"We cannot wait for fight night and are proud to bring this historic event to the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai," continued Schaefer, the Swiss professional boxing promoter who was the former CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

Mama (16-0, 9KOs) and Edwards (16-0, 4KOs) were supposed to fight in September 11 at Copper Box Arena, London, England but Edwards withdrew from the match because of an ankle injury.

WBO bantamweight champion John Riel Casimero will battle Paul Butler for a mandatory title fight. The 31-year-old Casimero, a champion in three weight classes, makes his third title defense. He has won a split decision victory over Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux last August 14.

Four-division champion Donnie Nietes is still a threat at 39 years old, and aims to prolong his winning streak. He showed that he can turn back the clock in a unanimous decision victory over Colombia’s Pablo Carillo last April 3.

* * *

Boxing trainer Edmund Villamor is elated that his popular trainee, “Ahas” Nietes, at present has a brighter tomorrow in the remaining years of his career after signing with Probellum.

* * *

According Cebu Daily News, Villamor said that he is happy for Nietes now than because they faced uncertainty with the fighter's former promoter, MTK Global and D4G Promotions.

* * *

For nearly seven months, after winning the WBO international super flyweight title in April against Carrillo, Nietes had no follow up fights scheduled by his previous promoters. But right after he signed with Probellum last October 21, Nietes immediately got a scheduled bout in December 11.

“I'm happy for Donnie because he was given a schedule,” said Villamor. “I'm glad that there's clear guide for Donnie's career.” Villamor added: “My expectations for this promotions are that they can give a dream fight for Donnie since they also guide Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire."

Nietes is currently ranked No. 6 in WBC, No. 4 in WBA, and No. 2 in WBO contender in the super flyweight division. Nietes and Donaire, both four-division world champions, are the top fighters of the new promotions outfit Probellum.

Casimero is disappointed that his next defense of the WBO bantamweight title won’t earn a big money fight for him after the new promotional company Probellum became the lone bidder for the match.

* * *

The WBO ordered Casimero to defend his belt against mandatory challenger Butler and the sanctioning boxing body put a minimum amount of $100,000 for purse bid.

* * *

Casimero posted on Facebook to express his disgust over the low purse as Probellum only bid $105,000, making it the automatic winner in the bidding process.

* * *

"I will fight even if I don’t have the proper support! Let's go!" Casimero posted on his Facebook page. MTK Global, the sports promotional company that handles Butler, didn’t attend the bidding process.

* * *

Casimero will collect 75 percent of the purse, or $78,750 while Butler will receive the remaining 25% or $26,250.

Stephen Curry established a record for the most three-pointers scored in all NBA games, including play-offs, when the Golden State Warriors defeated the Chicago Bulls. Curry now has 3,366 three-point baskets in regular season and play-off games converting nine in the Warriors win 119-93 to surpass Ray Allen's 3,358.

* * *

Curry finished the game with 40 points for the Western Conference leaders. It was the 52nd game in his career he had scored at least 40 points and did it four days after he tallied 50 against Atlanta Hawks.

* * *

Official NBA records exclude play-off games, so Curry has to overtake Allen's regular-season record of 2,973 three-pointers. Curry now has sank 2,896 three-point baskets.
