Japanese Boxer Jin Sasaki Suffers Memory Loss Following Brutal Knockout in WBO Title Fight

PhilBoxing.com

Japanese boxing prospect Jin Sasaki, 23, is facing a challenging recovery after suffering a devastating knockout in his WBO welterweight title bout against American Brian Norman Jr. on Thursday, June 19, in Tokyo. The full extent of the impact on Sasaki's health has now emerged, with reports indicating a disturbing loss of recent memory.

According to Issei Nakaya, president of the gym where Sasaki trains, the young fighter's ordeal extends beyond just the loss of the fight. "I don't even remember this world title fight," Sasaki reportedly told Nakaya after the event, as first revealed by the British tabloid "The Sun" on Sunday, June 22. This alarming statement suggests a period of amnesia encompassing not only the highly anticipated championship fight but potentially several weeks leading up to it.

The brutal knockout occurred in the fifth round of the contest. Sasaki, who was already trailing on the scorecards, succumbed to a powerful left hook from Norman Jr. that sent him crashing to the canvas, falling unconscious instantly. The impact was severe, with the back of Sasaki's head hitting the canvas hard, prompting immediate intervention from the ringside medical team.

While thankfully there are no immediate visible physical injuries from the knockout blow itself, the concern over Sasaki's neurological condition is paramount. Nakaya confirmed to The Sun that the gym will be closely monitoring Sasaki's recovery. "We will be monitoring him and he will return to the hospital tomorrow for another check-up," Nakaya stated, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the cautious approach being taken by his team.

This is the second misfortune of Japanese boxers in high profile fights within a month after Ginjiro Shigeoka was forced to retire after suffering a brain injury following his world title loss to Pedro Taduran of the Philippines last month in Osaka.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks in the sport of boxing. The focus now shifts from the outcome of the fight to Sasaki's long-term health and well-being, with the boxing community awaiting further updates on his condition.
