SPORTS SHORTS 166: JOE NOYNAY, AFTER DESTROYING LIAM WILSON, SHOOTS FOR WORLD TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

WBO Asia Pacific junior lightweight champion Joe Noynay makes the Philippines proud and works his way towards a chance for the world title when he destroyed previously unbeaten Australian Liam Wilson on July 7 at the Newcastle Entertainment Center in New South Wales, Australia.

* * *

Noynay (19-2-2, 8KOs), a southpaw fighter from Bogo City, Cebu, same birthplace of boxing legend Gabriel "Flash" Elorde, as he was also fighting out of Bebot Elorde boxing stable, was not able to fight last year like several Filipino boxers, due to lack of boxing promotions because of the ongoing pandemic.

"We did not plan for an early knockout, and I did not expect it." Noynay told asianboxing.info. Wilson (9-1,6 KOs) was knocked down in the very first round, but even if Noynay's team could smell an early triumph they were not over confident. It was Wilson's first career knockdown.

Wilson of Caboolture, Queensland, Australia, who called himself "Kryptonite" to southpaw boxers, went down the canvas again this time twice in a savage Noynay offensive in the fourth round. The Aussie was knocked down once more in the fifth round, and this time the referee compassionately ended the fight.

Wilson had a very nice pro record, and was on a fast rise to stardom with a 60% KO rate. He won the Australian super featherweight title in his third bout and the IBF Youth title in his fifth match. At the booming hands of Noynay alias "Jaw Breaker", Wilson tasted the first defeat in his 10th fight.

Before the Wilson bout, Noynay's last fight was on December 7, 2019, a technical draw against Kenichi Ogawa of Toyohashi, Aichi, Japan at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo in defense of the same WBO Asia Pacific title.

He won the vacant WBO Asia Pacific junior lightweight title on April 20, 2019 by 2nd round TKO of Kosuke Saka of Kishiwada, Osaka, Japan at the EDION Arena Osaka.

* * *

He also defended his belt by stopping London Olympics bronze medalist Satoshi Shimizu of Soja, Okayama, Japan by 6th round TKO on July 12, 2019 also at the EDION Arena Osaka.

* * *

On December 16, 2017, Noynay won the WBO Asia Pacific Youth title from previously unbeaten Pan Jinxiang of Shanghai, China by eighth round technical decision in Zhongshan, China.

* * *

He defeated Danilo Gabisay of Marilao, Bulacan on October 11, 2016 by first round knockout to win the vacant WBC Asian Boxing Council Silver featherweight title at the The Flash Grand Ballroom of the Elorde Sports Complex, Paranaque City.

* * *

He failed to win the WBC international super bantamweight title when the fight with Alie Laurel of General Santos City resulted in a split draw on February 18, 2016 at the SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City.

* * *

Noynay tasted first career defeat to Richard "The Beast" Pumicpic of Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte, by technical decision when the fight was stopped on the 8th round due to the cut on Pumicpic on May 4, 2016 at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall, Pasay City for the vacant WBC international super bantamweight title.

His other loss was dealt by Reiya Abe of Yama-gun of Fukushima, Japan on February 28, 2017 at the Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan by an 8-round unanimous decision.

* * *

Noynay is hoping to get a world title fight soon. Right before the Wilson fight, Noynay was ranked No. 7 by the WBO, No. 12 by the WBC and No. 15 by the IBF.

* * *

A few months ago, Noynay was calling out Oscar Valdez, the WBC world superfeatherweight champion in social media. But with his higher rating in the WBO, a title fight with its champion Jamel Herring or its interim titlist Shakur Stevenson would be easier to negotiate.

* * *

Noynay experienced two weeks of hotel quarantine in Sydney before the fight. “I’m away from my girlfriend, my family, my friends. It’s a big sacrifice. I’ve been alone for two weeks, training. I’m happy to be free," he said.

* * *

It was also a great sacrifice for Wilson who missed the third birthday of his daughter Charlotte the day before the fight.

* * *

Noynay also experienced difficulty in the fight when his right ear leaked blood after a thundering left hook connected by Wilson in the third round.

* * *

The referee told a devastated Wilson after the bout: “It’s not what happened tonight. It’s how you respond – that’s how champions are made.”

* * *

It's final. The Tokyo Olympics will proceed without spectators, organizers decided, as another rise in COVID-19 cases forced Japan to declare a state of emergency for the capital that will be the host of the quadrennial event known as the "Greatest Show on Earth."

* * *

It was already expected that drastic moves will be declared to make the Games safe, but it was a sharp change from the plan weeks earlier, when organizers said they wanted to hold the world's largest sporting showdown with limited spectators.

* * *

The Phoenix Suns guards of Devin Booker and Chris Paul scored a combined 113 points in the first two games against the Milwaukee Bucks. Booker and Paul broke the NBA record for most points by a starting backcourt in two Finals games in the last 50 seasons.

* * *

Steph Curry and Klay Thompson set the record of scoring 106 points in the first two games of their four-game sweep of LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2018. The Suns also became just the third team in NBA history to sink 20 or more 3-pointers in an NBA Finals game, like the 2019 Warriors and 2017 Cavaliers.
