60 years of the Historic Feat of The Brazilian Eder Jofre By Gabriel F. Cordero PhilBoxing.com Thu, 19 Nov 2020 On November 18, 1960, the Brazilian Eder Jofre defeated Mexican Eloy Sánchez by knockout in six rounds and obtained the vacant title of the National Boxing Association (1921-1962) today known as the WBA in a fight held in the historic Olympic Auditorium in The Angels. One of the great victories in a country where boxing was not popular, he was greeted upon his return as a national hero and paraded in a car to his home in Peruche Park, north of São Paulo. at a party that included important politicians and samba schools. Six decades have passed and his family fights so that the memory is not forgotten by the elderly and known by the youngest. His daughter Andrea Jofre, fights to keep this trajectory alive and takes care of Eder who suffers from chronic traumatic encephalopathy and, at 84, has trouble remembering some of his great moments in the ring. Jofre for years has expressed his sadness at being barely remembered. “It even hurts. I was a champion twice and people don't know who I am. Nobody is obliged to recognize, but being a two-time champion in a country where people only talk about football is no small thing," said Eder. Jofre held the NBA / WBA rooster title until 1965. He then won the Spanish Jose Legrá, the featherweight world championship of the World Boxing Council (WBC) in 1973. Between 1957 to 1976, Jofre obtained 72 wins (50KOs), two losses and four draws and is a member of the International Hall of Fame in Canatosta, New York. Despite the awards abroad, Eder's relatives remain sad because he has not received due credit in Brazil, but for the rest of the world he is recognized as the "Golden Rooster".
