RETRO WBSS: GASSIEV’S MASTERPIECE IN SOCHI

Murat Gassiev vs Yuniel Dorticos was the second Cruiserweight Semi of Season 1 of the quest for the Ali Trophy, and rebroadcast live tonight at 7pm (UK) on World Boxing Super Series Facebook and YouTube.
The bout in Sochi, Russia between the IBF and WBA champ was undoubtedly among the best of 2018, and was in fact awarded Fight of the Year by Yahoo Sports with the following motivation:
“The fight was an example of how good the cruiserweight division can be: When they met in Russia on Feb. 3, Gassiev and Dorticos competed at a high level, landed thudding punches and consistently delivered action from the fast-paced beginning to the exciting finish in the final minute of Round 12.
“In a year filled with good fights, it was easily the best of the bunch and is thus the 2018 Yahoo Sports Boxing Fight of the Year.”
This fight made Gassiev a bona fide star, and a very serious contender to take home the Ali Trophy against Aleksandr Usyk in the final. Young Gassiev put together a masterpiece of a performance against a Cuban with a world-class amateur background.
However, The Miami-based ‘KO Doctor’ showed a granite chin, a warrior’s heart, and incredible mental strength. And eventually came back strong to reach the final of Season 2’ quest for the Ali Trophy in the 200 lbs division.
