No title defense yet for Pedro Taduran By Teodoro Medina Reynoso and Romuel Alarcon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 29 Sep 2019 Pedro Taduran. Brothers Johnny and Art Monis of Hardstone Promotion has deferred plans for a title defense by newly crowned IBF munimumweight champion Pedro General Taduran for the rest of the current year pending a scheduled meeting with international matchmaker Sean Gibbons next month. This was revealed by the Monis brothers in a live interview together with Taduran in our weekly radio boxing program airing every Saturday 3-5 pm over RP2 Sports Radio 918 khz. Johnny Monis said Gibbons will be coming over to present and discuss with the Taduran camp a possible co-promotion agreement with the MP Promotion of Senator Manny Pacquiao who has expressed interest in getting the young Libon, Albay native under his wings. Senator Pacquiao was instrumental in the staging of the recent all Filipino bout between Taduran and then undefeated top rated Samuel Salva for the vacant IBF minimumweight title held recently at the Philippine Marine Corps Jurado Hall won by Taduran after Salva was forced to retire before the start of the fifth round. The Monis brothers said they are open to and welcome such arrangement with MP Promotion as it will certainly benefit Taduran in terms of giving him wider exposure and bigger fights and better earning opportunities. Taduran is currently being trained by former world champion Tacy Macalos who devised the strategy which proved very effective in neutralizing and eventually wearing down Salva, a methodical boxer and counterpuncher. Macalos, a veteran of many international fights when he was still fighting including in Thailand was also with Taduran when he fought in first but failed title attempt against Chayapoon Monsri also known as Wanheng Menayothin last year. The Monises admitted that their promotional firm is not that capable and experienced in organizing or negotiating for international events as world title fights hence the entry of MP Promotion through Gibbons will be of great help in furthering Taduran's career as well as protecting the interest of their 23 year old boxing champion. In the aftermath of Taduran's recent win, they have earlier expressed a plan to have their ward hold his first title defense even outside of the country given the right offers. But now they are saying that it would be more preferable if Taduran will defend his title in a neutral territory to give him a better or at least an equal chance of winning. Art Monis related how they were given a raw deal in Taduran's previous title try against WBC champion Menayothin in Thailand where the official weighin was reset a few times from morning to late in the afternoon apparently to give the Thai time to shed extra poundage. Eventually, Menayothin was measured at exactly 105 lbs, the minimumweight maximum limit after a quick trip at the scales but they were surprised when Taduran tipped in three pounds under the limit. Taduran had consistently come within the limit using the scale at their hotel before leaving for the rescheduled weighin. Taduran lost in a closely fought title bout the following day but Monis and Macalos suspected the Thai champion was grossly overweight by fight time, to the disadvantage of Pedro. Despite that sad experience, Monis said if Taduran will be successful after a couple of title defenses, they may pursue a unification against the same Menayothin who has broken the undefeated record of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. with his current 51-0 pro boxing slate. That will be a possibility once Taduran whose maternal surname is General (pronounced as Heneral) has latched up with Senator Pacquiao's MP Promotion. Which hopefully will come soon.
