September 26, 2019, Makati, Philippines -- A crowd of over 700 came together to witness the unveiling of the first-ever Philippine Professional Sports Summit, with the theme, "Bridging Gaps and Forging Unity in Philippine Professional Sports", which was organized by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB). The summit was held on September 24-25, 2019 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

PICC was filled with many sports aficionados and prominent professional athletes like billiards champion Efren 'Bata' Reyes, IBF world minimumweight champion Pedro Taduran, WBC featherweight champion Mark Magsayo, football icons Stephan Schrock and James Younghusband, PBA legend William Adornado, and Gilas Pilipinas player Kiefer Ravena, to name a few. Also, Senator Angara and Senator Bong Go, both well-known and passionate supporters of sports in the Philippines, were present during the event to give their valuable insights and inspirational messages.

"As they say, great things happen when there is a gathering of great minds. It has been three years since I assumed office, but our goal in GAB is still the same -- to place the Philippine sports onto global scale and lay ground for its further success," said Chairman Abraham Khalil "BAHAM" Mitra as he set the tone of the event when he delivered his opening remarks.

The two-day event was organized by GAB to solicit new ideas and recommendations from various sports stakeholders and professional athletes to improve the state of professional sports in the country.

In order to realize the objectives of the sports summit, two of our lawmakers graced the event to show their support and sincere commitment to uphold the interest of every Filipino athlete.

Senator Angara, the Chairman of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and sponsor of National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act of Republic Act No. 10699 and Philippine Sports Training Center Act or Republic Act No. 11214, showcased his "whole of nation" approach to our grassroots sports development programs. "Every portion of our society--from the government to the private sector, schools and companies, teachers and businessmen, families and friends--must be on the look-out for the next Manny Pacquiao or Hidilyn Diaz," said Senator Angara to the audience; moreover, he mentioned that President Duterte supports the establishment of a national academy for sports to train and prepare the aspiring young Filipino athletes. Likewise, Senator Bong Go, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports said that, "Makakaasa po kayo na sa huling tatlong taon ni Pangulong Duterte, kasama kami sa Senado, ay patuloy na maisusulong ang ating mga programa sa ikauunlad ng sports at ikabubuti ng atletang Pilipino."
