?Pacquiao to Suffer Tito Trinidad?s Fate if He Invades Higher Divisions? By Alex P. Vidal PhilBoxing.com Sun, 27 Jan 2008 ILOILO CITY -- To avoid the fate suffered by former world undisputed welterweight champion Felix ?Tito? Trinidad who was recently humiliated by lightheavyweight boss Roy Jones Jr., the most logical advice given by boxing experts from outside Metro Manila is still for Manny Pacquiao to stay in the 130-lb class and ?decline any temptation? for him to invade the lightweight and junior welterweight divisions. ?If he will dispose off (Juan Manuel) Marquez on March 15, he can remain in his fighting weight and let those ambitious challengers come to his territory in the super featherweight division,? suggested 77-year-old lawyer and philosopher Ernesto J. Dayot of Guimbal, Iloilo. ?He is the king and therefore he should remain in his castle.? Leonardo ?Nards? Grande, 78, a political and boxing analyst, said the Filipino ring superstar might suffer the fate of Trinidad who recently lost to Jones convincingly in the light heavyweight division. ?Despite his (Trinidad) talent, he certainly could not match the ferocity and mastery of Jones because he was fighting in the higher division where Jones is considered king,? said Grande, spokesman of former city mayor Mansueto Malabor, the first city mayor to build a boxing gym in Arevalo district here. SP04 Dick Sabadao, a boxing patron and staunch Pacquiao admirer, said if Pacquiao will next fight in the lightweight division, it should be against a not-so-ferocious fighter and not the likes of Juan Diaz and Michael Katsidis. ?If he can beat his lesser-known lightweight foe convincingly, then he can fight for the world title in the lightweight division. He must prove first that he can absorb the punches of a lightweight boxer. Remember the Ortiz-Elorde fight?? Sabado said. ?Elorde was great. There was no question about it. But he was fighting an extremely talented Ortiz like him in Ortiz?s fighting weight.? Boxing promoter and Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) regional director Porferio Clavel said ?it?s a big disgrace for some sportswriters and matchmakers to even float the idea of pitting Pacquiao against Oscar dela Hoya.? ?Are they crazy?? quipped Clavel.
