GORRES: IT'S NOW OR NEVER! PhilBoxing.com Sun, 06 Jan 2008 Finesse and brute ruggedness heats up in the ring on February 2 at the Cebu Waterfront Hotel in Lahug. Premier sports cable network Solar Sports, in co-operation with ALA Promotions, brings to Cebu City the International Boxing Federation (IBF) mandatory eliminator fight between reigning IBF Intercontinental super flyweight champion Z ?The Dream? Gorres and former IBF/IBO world super flyweight king Vic ?The Raging Bull? Darchinyan. After a heartbreaking and controversial loss last year in his bid for the WBO super flyweight crown, Gorres comes back with another shot at the world boxing championship supremacy under IBF. ?This fight will pave his way in taking a shot at the IBF world super flyweight title,? noted ALA Gym president Michael Aldeguer. ?And Z has to go for it now or never!? Darchinyan has vowed to knock out Gorres. But some observers, including reigning IBF/IBO super flyweight champ Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire, Jr. who wrested the crown from Darchinyan, believe that it would be very difficult for Darchinyan to do so. The victor of this fight will have a shot at facing the Russian champion, Dmitri Kirilov. In the undercard, reigning Philippine junior welterweight titlist Mark Jason Melligen of ALA Gym will slug it out with current Indonesian junior welter weight champ Tia Koswara of Bandung, Indonesia. Melligen (9-1-0, KO 7) snatched the vacant crown against Christopher Saluday of Victorias City in June 2007. The southpaw from Bacolod City started off his boxing career at age 20 through a first-round knockout of Roland Malonhao in Tagbilaran City. Koswara (15-5-2, KO 8) dominated the Indonesian junior welter weight division since April 14, 2005 when he defeated then reigning king Anwar Solihin by a stoppage in the 5th round. He is a durable fighter with fist power that can stay long in the ring against sturdy opponents. The tournament will also feature two fiery bouts between Romeo ?Jack? Jakosalem of Davao City against Gary Kickitt of Sydney, Australia and James Bacon of Mandaue City against Disdado Perez of Manila. Jakosalem is a welterweight clobber who won four of his five career fights with two stoppages coming within the 3rd round. His boxing campaign spread around the islands of Cebu and Bohol since August 2006. Kickitt won all of his eight fights, four of which by way of knock. Young firebrand James Bacon (3-0-0, KO 2), who has knocked out his opponents within the first three rounds, will face Manile?o Diosdado Perez (2-2-0) in the latter?s bid to extend his battles outside Luzon. Also fighting in the under card are highly-rated ringsters Rollen Del Castillo of ALA Gym against Fabio Marfa of Mandaue City. The night?s opener will be between Alejandro Belonguel of Mandaue City and Ruel Quizon of Manila?s Dagdagen Stable; followed by an encounter with Filipino-American, now New Jersey resident, JV Tuazon and Rey Villar of Sultan Kudarat. |
