IS BRONER's THICK BEARD REALLY A CONCERN?
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Fri, 18 Jan 2019

LAS VEGAS -- At the undercard press conference this morning, one of the issues discussed on the side bar is Adrien Broner?s very thick beard.
Buboy Fernandez, Pacquiao?s chief trainer indicated that Team Pacquiao is requesting that Broner shave off his beard.
Fernandez has great reasons for the alleged request. The very thick beard of Broner may serve as an incidental weapon for Broner. ?Imagine,? Fernandez stated, ?during close quarter combat the beard which is so thick might accidentally poke the eyes of Pacquiao and that may result in his inability to see,? he added.
?In addition," as one pundit mentioned, "it may serve as a cushion from Manny?s punches. Therefore, it has to go.?
As of this writing, there is no indication if Broner will shave his beard or not. ?They have different rules in different places,? Fernandez further stated ?so we do not know if the Nevada rules will allow Broner to keep his beard, but we are hoping if he refuses, at the very least, it should be trimmed.?
But to this writer, the word ?trimmed? is subject to interpretation. How much must be removed? Broner can trim off a couple of millimeters and claim he has trimmed it. Therefore I think, during the negotiations, if Broner refuses to trim it really short, they should have an agreement as to how much to trim.
But it is far better if he, in the name of fairness and safety, shaves it all off. It may even improve his looks.
Speaking of safety, it is not only for Pacquiao but also for Broner himself.
If he refuses to shave his beard and God forbids, he get cut by a punch or an accidental head butt in an area where the beard is thick, it may be more difficult for his cutman to control the bleeding because the beard will restrict his access to the cut.
