Robby Gonzales and Yoseline Perez Progress to Semifinals at World Boxing Cup: Astana 2025

Perez Earns 5-0 Win Over Turkey; Gonzales Captures 4-1 Win Against Germany

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (July 3, 2025) – Team USA secured its first two medals at the World Boxing Cup: Astana 2025 after Yoseline Perez (female 54 kg) and Robby Gonzales (male 80 kg) picked up victories Thursday inside Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov Martial Arts Palace in Astana, Kazakhstan. Perez and Gonzales advance to the medal rounds and are each guaranteed at least a bronze medal.

Perez kicked off Thursday's slate for Team USA and secured her second 5-0 victory of the tournament, marking her fifth unanimous decision of 2025. The Houston, Texas, native has dominated internationally this year and has won 71.4 percent of her 2025 matchups via unanimous decision. Perez's latest win came over Turkey's Gamze Soguksu, whom she bullied for three rounds in the quarterfinals of the World Boxing Cup: Astana 2025.

Following Thursday's win, Perez has officially secured her third medal of 2025, and she will now box Poland's Wiktoria Rogalinska in the semifinals on Saturday, July 5. Perez captured a silver medal at the World Boxing Cup: Brazil 2025 and followed up with a gold medal at the World Boxing Challenge Grand Prix Usti Nad Labem in the Czech Republic last month.

Gonzales was the last American boxer to compete on day four of the tournament and he did not disappoint the USA audience. After dealing out several severe shots to the body of Germany's Ben Ehis, Gonzales earned a 4-1 decision. The Las Vegas, Nev., product will now contend for a medal on Saturday against France's Yojerlin Cesar in a semifinal bout.

Gonzales has guaranteed a spot atop the podium for the week, which marks his second international medal of the year. Last month, he claimed a bronze medal at the World Boxing Challenge Grand Prix Usti Nad Labem.

Marie Rosendo (female, 70 kg) also boxed for Team USA on Thursday but fell to Germany's Leonie Muller via a 5-0 decision. Rosendo concluded her second international competition of 2025, earning experience that she will build upon for the future.

Due to medical reasons, Team USA withdrew Alyssa Mendoza (female 57 kg) from the World Boxing Cup: Astana 2025 ahead of her quarterfinal bout on Thursday. Mendoza's health was taken into account in the decision, and she was withdrawn from the tournament as a precautionary measure. While Mendoza exits the World Boxing Cup: Astana 2025, she is expected to recover and compete at the inaugural World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England, in September.

Team USA will look to secure two more medals in the remaining days of the tournament. Morelle McCane (female 65 kg) and Rene Camacho (male 65 kg) will return to action in the quarterfinal rounds of their respective brackets on Friday, July 4. McCane will open the day for Team USA against France's Maelys Richol in Ring B, bout four. Camacho will then take the ring against India's Abhinash Jamwal in Ring A, bout seven.

Head Coach Billy Walsh (Colorado Springs, Colo.) leads the charge for Team USA at the World Boxing Cup: Astana 2025. National Resident Coach Timothy Nolan (Rochester, N.Y.), Nicole Burleson (Bethany, Okla.), and Eric Zimmerman (Alexandria, Va.) will continue to assist Coach Walsh throughout the week.
