Borromeo Leads Winners of the Philippine Speedcubing Championships

Villaseran Shines as Lone Female Podium Finisher

Leo Borromeo stamped his class in the premier 3x3x3 even as Cielo Beatriz Villaseran emerged as the only female speedcuber to achieve a podium finish in any of the 17 events, finishing a strong 3rd on the Skewb competition.

Borromeo displayed coolness under pressure to tow Crimson Arradaza and Toby Litiatco to podium after thrilling 3x3x3 head-to-head finals. Borromeo also was champion in the 4x4x4 with Inigo Palisoc settling for silver medal.

The young guns showed their worth and made their presence felt with Karl Abarquez winning the Square One event, Juan Miguel Magallanes leading a 1-2 finish with fellow youngster James Certeza in the 2x2x2 event, Zoei Principe bagging gold in the Clock competition and Chris Padua dethroning defending champion and his coach Jansen Alvarez in the Pyraminx. Alvarez settled for the silver medal.

Villaseran on the other hand finished a fighting 3rd behind back-to-back champion Kirby Jay Caragan and Karl Abarquez in a highly contested Skewb competition.

Not to be outdone were the veterans with Inigo Palisoc winning 5x5x5 and 6x6x6 Dale Palmares, emerged victorious in 7x7x7, Martin Gonzales securing the gold medal in the One Hand 3x3x3, Yuji Yoshida winning 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with both Single and Mean National Records, Nicole Jnus Macalalad winning Megaminx, Gavriel Arcilla winning for 3x3x3 Blindfolded, Marc Jason Laresma taking top spot for 4x4x4 Blindfolded, Brian Acuña winning with a PR single, and John Gordo claiming top honors for 3x3x3 Multi-Blind.
Adding prestige and more excitement to the competition was the participation of top foreign bets, American Tommy Cherry who emerged as the darling of the crowd. He ruled the overall Square 1, and his specialty, 3x3x3 Blindfolded competition while Ayooluwa Dada got silver in 6x6x6, bronze in 7x7x7 en route to breaking several national records along the way. Korean Yeon Kyun Park won top place overall in Skewb, 4x4x4 Blindfolded, and 5x5x5 Blindfolded.

Aside from Skewb podium finisher Cielo Beatriz Villaseran, the country's other top female speedcubers made a great account of themselves, barging ito the finals of several events. Leigh Anne Guibani the only female to make it in 3x3x3 finals, Kat Gonzales in 3x3x3 One Handed, Nicole Santos in Square One and Clock, Ayra Negrillo and Jhazmine Lacsamana in Skewb, Anne Gwyneth Villaseran in Clock, as well as orgabizers Bea Alexandra Marie Flores, in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, and Enika Aubrey Maninang in Megaminx.-Marlon Bernardino -
