Pacquiao needs to throw more punches to outsmart Matthysse on Saturday By Leo Reyes PhilBoxing.com Mon, 09 Jul 2018 ![]() There?s a bit of good news from the training camp of eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, who is set to fly to Kuala Lumpur Monday for his final phase of training in his comeback fight after more than a year of inactivity. Pacquiao is set to clash with reigning WBA Welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse of Argentina on Saturday, July 15 at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In his last fight against Jeff Horn of Australia last year, Pacquiao has been criticized and blamed for not throwing more punches when he got Horn wobbling in round nine but failed to follow up to end the fight by knockout. It may be recalled that Horn was the aggressor in the early rounds but Pacquiao took control of the situation in round nine. It was reported that the referee warned Horn that he would be forced to stop the fight if he fails to show more competitiveness in the succeeding rounds. The fight ended in controversy when the ring announcer declared Horn as the winner, drawing widespread protest from television viewers worldwide with most of the networks covering the fight scoring in favor of Pacquiao. Aside from Compubox scoring more punches in favor of Pacquiao, boxing experts and international TV networks gave Pacquiao winning scores. They include ESPN?s Dan Rafael (117-111), Teddy Atlas also of ESPN (116-111), The Guardian (117-111). CBS Sports scored it 114-114 while Steve Bunce of BoxNation scored it 115-113 for Horn. On Saturday, Pacquiao has committed to throw more punches. According to Pacquiao?s head trainer Buboy Fernandez and conditioning coach Justin Fortune, Pacquiao will be more active this time with more head movements and footwork. ?Boxing fans all over the world will see a young Manny Pacquiao this time, throwing a lot of punches, more footwork, head movements and all he?s been showing before when he was acclaimed the best-for-pound fighter in the world,? they told Philboxing?s Eddie Alinea. Pacquiao, who is known for his speed and power, has not scored a knockout win since hisTKO victory over Miguel Cotto in 2009. Fernandez, who is taking over from Pacquiao?s longtime trainer Freddie Roach for the Matthysse fight assured boxing fans that the fighting senator will throw more punches this time and will definitely go for a knockout win on Saturday.
