SUGAR NUNEZ: I’M JUST GETTING STARTED

PhilBoxing.com

Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez makes the first defense of his IBF World Super-Featherweight title against Christopher Diaz at CUM Los Mochis in Sinaloa, Mexico on Saturday night, live worldwide on DAZN – and the champion told Matchroom’s YouTube series ‘A Day in the Life’ that this is just the start of his journey in the elite bracket of the sport.

Nunez (28-1 27 KOs) won the vacant title with a composed decision win over hometown favorite Masanori Rikiishi in Yokahama, Japan in May, and puts the title on the line for the first time against Diaz (30-5 19 KOs), the American aiming to make it third time lucky in World title contests.

The explosive champion showed plenty of boxing skill and ring smarts to compliment his fearsome power in securing the title in Japan, a third win on the road for the 28 year old who has more than earned his hometown showcase this Saturday.

There are some mouth-watering clashes out there for the IBF king should he successfully retain his title big names holding the other titles and ambitious contenders circling for a shot, but Nunez is laser-focused on the task at hand as he takes the first step on what he believes will be a long stint at the elite level.

Nunez’s clash with Diaz tops the bill in Los Mochis with the co-main event pitting Pedro Guevara (43-5-1 22 KOs) against Adrian Curiel (26-6-1 5 KOs) over ten rounds at Super-Flyweight, unbeaten Flyweight Yoali Mosqueda (13-0 10 KOs) meets German Valenzuela (17-7 12 KOs) over ten rounds and Super-Welterweight talent Hector Beltran Jr (3-0 3 KOs) takes on Moises Martinez-Zumaya (2-0 1 KO) over four rounds.

QUOTES FROM SUGAR NUNEZ

“I know I still have a long way to go; we’re just getting started. I’m about to make my first defense. My goal is to be an idol. Thank God, we are World champion. To maintain it, even become champion in different categories, and to set a good example for kids, the next generation, and to all people in general.

“I’m grateful that people support me, but we are aware of the commitment we have, and we try to put aside the issue of socializing and all that. At the end of the day, you have to work, and you have to take the commitment seriously.

“We are working to put on a good show, get a good victory for Mexico, and I can assure you; this will be no exception. A Mexican boxer identifies as a warrior and as an athlete with many dreams and goals, and balls; above all, a lot of balls.”
