AZUMAH NELSON COMING FOR WBC CONVENTION
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 07 Nov 2007

One of the great former world champions Azumah Nelson is coming for the WBC Convention which officially opens on Monday, November 12.
Games and Amusements Board chairman Eric Buhain told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that the former WBC super featherweight champion will join other ring greats such as Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Erik ?El Terrible? Morales and Oscar Larios at the convention.
Golden Boy Promotions vice president and international matchmaker Eric Gomez will also be attending the convention at the historic Manila Hotel along with Manny Pacquiao?s former manager Shelly Finkel.
Meantime, Gomez was named the WBO ?Promoter of the Year? for the second year in a row. The 34 year old Gomez is a close friend of the great Oscar De La Hoya who unfortunately cannot attend the convention.
Another boxing luminary expected in Manila is Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who is expected to fly to Manila after the Sugar Shane Mosley-Miguel Cotto fight in New York this Sunday, Manila Time.
The 49 year old Nelson, one of the all-time greats from Ghana and arguably the best fighter to come out of Africa was featherweight champion from 1984-1988 and junior lightweight champion from 1988-1994 and then again from 1995-1997. He ended his career with a record of 39-5-2 with 28 knockouts. He lost the WBC super featherweight title to Jesse James Leija on May 7, 1993 by a unanimous decision.
Known as ?The Professor? Nelson later fought Genaro Hernandez for the title on March 22, 1997 and dropped a split decision. He then moved up to lightweight and once again battled Leija for the vacant crown and dropped a unanimous decision on July 11, 1998 in San Antonio, Texas. It was his last fight.
During his career Nelson defeated such greats as Wilfredo Gomez and Jeff Fenech of Australia over whom he won by an eighth round TKO.
