SULAIMAN ARRIVES TODAY PhilBoxing.com Wed, 07 Nov 2007 MANILA -- WORLD Boxing Council (WBC) Chairman Jose Mauricio Sulaiman arrives today to signal the start of activities leading to the official start of the 45th WBC Convention on Nov. 11-14 at the Manila Hotel. The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) projects the event as ?professional boxing with a heart? as GAB Chairman Eric Buhain and other sports and government officials will welcome Sulaiman in simple rites before Sulaiman?s party and top honchos of the GAB start their visits to charitable institutions as part of their activities for the conference which expects to gather more than 600 foreign delegates as well as 400 local representatives. ?This is it, the big day that we?ve been waiting for.? Buhain, a former champion swimmer, Olympian and chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) said. ?Mr. Sulaiman will be an active participant in what we call a working conference and our activities start as soon as he sets foot at the airport.? The WBC Conference also received a big boost from former Senator Joey Lina, now Manila Hotel president. ?Sen. Lina has been very accommodating to our requests, especially on matters dealing with the welcoming of the foreign delegates,? Buhain said. ?I hopes this event not only boosts Philippine boxing, but also our tourism and who knows, some delegates might even see our country as a nice place to invest in for their businesses.? Buhain will lead the small entourage in visits to the wards of Philippine General Hospital in Manila and the orphanage put up by New Zealand boxing referee Bruce Mctavish for the street children of Angeles, Pampanga. ?The visits are part of the WNC Cares program that Mr. Sulaiman proudly supports,? Buhain said. ?This convention will be a working conclave. We have set up activities as early as Nov. 8, although the actual start of the convention is on Nov. 11.? A special horseracing event, dubbed the Mabuhay WBC Cup is also scheduled on Nov. 11 at the Manila Jockey Club to serve as a recreational activity for the delegates. Ratings committee members and WBC executive staff are scheduled to Nov. 9 in time for their meeting on the following day. A courtesy call on President Arroyo is also scheduled in the afternoon of Nov. 10 with Sulaiman leading the WBC delegation. The WBC Board of Governors also arrives on the 10th. A dinner at the Elorde Sports Complex will cap the day. Government has thrown its full support to the WBC convention which was last held in the Philippines 37 years ago. "This will be a gigantic milestone for bringing world-renowned boxers to our country. This year's scheduled convention is a chance for us to showcase the Philippines once again as one of the foremost countries that support and promote boxing," Buhain said. |
