Mayol spots Mexican?s weakness

PhilBoxing.com

CORPUS CHRISTI. Former WBC lightflyweight champion Rodel Mayol said yesterday Mexican challenger Israel Gonzalez has a tendency to bring down his left hand after throwing a right straight and that could set him up for a killer right hook from IBF superflyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas when they clash at the American Bank Center here tomorrow morning (Manila time).

Mayol, who now lives in Los Angeles after migrating from Mandaue, is in town to back up Ancajas? trainer Joven Jimenez. Asian Games gold medalist Bobby Jalnaiz and two-time Asian Gamer Delfin Boholst are other volunteers in Ancajas? team. Jalnaiz, who also migrated to Los Angeles, is a two-time Olympian. Boholst, a retired Philippine Army first lieutenant, flew in from Manila to assist Ancajas. They monitor Ancajas? training and are involved in strategy. Additionally, Mayol prepares Ancajas? food.

It was Mayol who found a video of Gonzalez? 2016 fight against former WBO lightflyweight champion Ramon Garcia after a long search. ?If you look for Gonzalez? fights on YouTube, there?s nothing,? he said. ?So I checked the fights of his opponents and I got lucky. I?ve studied Gonzalez? moves on video. He likes to throw the right straight, left hook and left uppercut. I think he?s wide open for a right hook from Jerwin because Gonzalez brings down his left hand after throwing a right straight. Once Jerwin lands, it?s over. Gonzalez has little footwork but can step in or out. He won?t back down so he?s a perfect opponent for Jerwin. He?ll engage and come forward like most Mexican fighters.?

Mayol, 36, has lived in Los Angeles for eight years with wife Lira, an accountant, and their children Bryce, 14 and Rylan, 9. He retired from prizefighting in 2012 after losing to Juan Carlos Sanchez in an IBF superflyweight title bout in Mexico. His biggest moment came when he stopped Mexico?s Edgar Sosa for the WBC 108-pound title in Mexico in 2009. Mayol lost the crown to Mexico?s Omar Nino Romero in his second defense a year later. He ended his career with a record of 31-6-2, with 22 KOs.

?Jerwin?s one of our up-and-coming fighters,? said Mayol. ?This is his big break in the US. I expect him to be a champion for a long time. Eventually, he can move up to bantamweight and superbantamweight.?

Mayol trains fighters at Freddie Roach?s Wild Card Gym. Two of his top prospects are superflyweight Aston Palicte and lightweight Romero Duno. Palicte, 27, is coming off a fifth round stoppage of Mexico?s Jose Alfredo Rodriguez in Round Rock, Texas, last December while Duno, 22, is fresh from disposing of Mexico?s Yardley Cruz in one round as the Forum in Inglewood last week. Palicte, the WBO No. 2 contender, is from Bago City and Duno from Cotabato City. Mayol said Palicte is one or two fights away from a world title shot and has a 24-2 record, with 20 KOs. Duno?s record is 16-1, with 14 KOs and the timetable is to go for a world crown within two years.
