Arizona Boxing News & Notes with Don Smith: Response to World Boxing Federation, Pacquiao News By Don Smith PhilBoxing.com Fri, 22 Dec 2017 Boxing Fans: In our last column, Arizona Boxing News & Notes reported that Arizona featherweight boxer Keenan ?Bedo? Carbajal defeated Miguel Ponce (5th round knockout) on December 16 in Agua Prieta, Mexico to capture the vacant WBF (World Boxing Federation) Regional Featherweight title. Howard Goldberg, President of the World Boxing Federation, took issue with our story printed online (Boxing News 24) on Tuesday, December 20 and characterized it as ?completely inaccurate and one sided.? As editor of Arizona Boxing News & Notes I feel obligated to give our readers and Mr. Goldberg a response to his allegations in accordance with our editorial policy of never fearing the truth. The truth is very clear; Keenan Carbajal messaged his friends and fans that he won a world title in Agua Prieta, Mexico on December 2017. The event was promoted by EL Charco Promotions. In reality, the 26 year old American boxer won a regional boxing title not a world title as claimed; therefore, the charge of ?completely inaccurate? is false. In addition, all of the names mentioned in the column are spelled correctly. As a respected member of the fourth estate, ABNN is obligated to expose lies and we don?t have to apologize to Howard or anyone for uncovering obvious untruths. As to Mr. Goldberg?s charge that we didn?t attempt to contact the World Boxing Federation, we were under the impression that the person to contact with the Federation was West Coast (USA) WBF Supervisor Alan Santana; however, when we tried his last known phone # it was disconnected. We did email the organization twice but the messaging attempt to the World Boxing Federation was rejected. In our defense, we believed that our story would reach the eyes of the WBF and if they had objections we would hear from the organization. They do and we never shy away from criticism or printing another perspective; ABNN works very hard to be objective. So, readers will understand why we chose to expose the lie; it revolves around past actions and statements exhibited and made by the boxer and his grandfather/trainer Danny Carbajal, a convicted felon. In July 2007, Danny was found guilty, by a jury of his peers, to one count of fraudulent schemes and two counts of theft. He was accused of unlawfully transferring land and property that was jointly held by him and his late wife, Sally Carbajal. For his crime, Danny Carbajal was sentenced to 4 ? years in prison in February 2008. Earlier this year (2017), the trainer was found guilty in (Maricopa County Superior Court) of committing fraud against his estranged brother and plaintiff, 6 time world champion Michael Carbajal. As a result, the presiding Judge ordered that the elder Carbajal?s name be removed as a board member of the Ninth Street Gym, considered a Historical Phoenix landmark. In reaching their verdict, the jury was convinced that Danny lied and they were unanimous in rejecting the trainer?s assertion that an attorney had told him he could use a proxy vote from his deceased wife to make operational decisions at the gym. The champ took his estranged brother to court after he discovered that his older brother had illegally donated the gym to the Youth Assistance Foundation, a non-profit organization. The transaction was ruled illegal and voided. During his lengthy time on the stand, Danny Carbajal described himself as the former trainer of several world champions and he told the jury that his grandson (Keenan) would be fighting for a world title before the end of 2017. His testimony was all about him and he came off as a bit eccentric and egotistical. Keenan has made the police blotter at least once or twice. 2-3 years ago, the grandson choked his girlfriend and Phoenix Police Department showed up-collected evidence and filed a report; but, the girlfriend later retracted the story and they remain together. In addition , Keenan faces an upcoming legal confrontation as a defendant in a pending case that is expected to be heard next year. So, the history of both Carbajal?s makes it more difficult to believe anything they say including the announcement that Keenan Carbajal was to fight for a world championship; now we know the statement was a lie. Mr. Goldberg also took ABNN to task for contacting the WBF boxing organization (World Boxing Foundation) and allow them to speak negatively of the World Boxing Federation. Until we contacted the World Boxing Foundation; we didn?t know which WBF organization sponsored the title belt; it was our dialogue with the World Boxing Foundation that allowed us to find the correct WBF that was sponsoring the WBF regional title fight. Mr. Goldberg sent a list of what he termed as facts in comparing the two organizations and in our effort to remain neutral in the disagreement between the two parties ABNN decided to report his list: (1) The World Boxing Federation operates in over 50 countries worldwide. Goldberg wonders how many the World Boxing Foundation operates. (2) The World Boxing Federation has at present 19 world champions (men and women); the World Boxing Foundation has five. (3) The World Boxing Federation has had 3 conventions over the past five years compared to zero for the World Boxing Foundation. (4) Mr. Goldberg said he could go on and on. He went on to state that our article was ?inept? and suggested that ABNN should contact Olaf Schroder for additional ?accurate? information. In our opinion Mr. Schroder should contact the World Boxing Foundation and complain to them about their statements-good night and good luck! We feel no need to apologize to Mr. Goldberg or his organization because ABNN wasn?t inaccurate or one sided in its? report. The assertion is nonsense; however, as editor of Arizona Boxing News & Notes, I was more than happy to present his complaint and I hope our rebuttal response ties the knot ends his dissatisfaction....Once Again, Good Night and Good Luck! A special thanks to Boxing New 24 for forwarding the complaint to our assignment desk and we hope to continue our relationship with Boxing News 24 for years to come. It is a fine organization and a fitting vehicle to present honest journalism. Boxing News: According to BoxRec, Phoenix lightweight Ray Beltran (34-7-1-21 knockouts) will fight Paul Moses (40-3-25 knockouts) in Reno Nevada on 2/16 for the vacant WBO lightweight title. Ray was tentatively scheduled to be on the Gilberto Ramirez card in Corpus Christi (2/3) but apparently Top Card decided to make a switch. There is speculation that if Beltran beats Moses and wins the WBO lightweight title, he will then put it on the line against Vasyl Lomachenko; wouldn?t that be interesting. The veteran Beltran will have to punch through Lomachenko?s punches to have any chance of defeating the Olympic double gold winner. If Lomachenko should meet and prevail over Beltran, he would then (according to speculation) fight Mikey Garcia who is taller and bigger; a little special something to look forward to in 2018......?Amateur standout Fernando Meza (Strong Enough Boxing) is ready to turn professional early next year. He plans to work college into his life schedule; good for him...... Top Rank prospect Danny ?El Chapulin? Valdivia (14-1-10 knockouts) faces Vladimir Hernandez (9-2-6 knockouts) in an 8 round rematch to revenge his lone loss. The bout probably ends speculation that Valdivia will face Irish Canadian Janks Trotter on the Iron Boy 43 Card, 2/24 at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix.....Five-time world champion Timothy ?Desert Storm? will be signing copies of his book (?Hard to Heart?) at the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemore, California; site for the Valdivia/Hernandez fight. Bradley will host a meet and greet at the Casino and will on hand to give away 30 copies to the first 30 fans in line starting at 4 PM on Thursday January 11. The first fight begins at 7 p.m. and doors open at 6:30. Ticket seekers can go online at www.Tachipalace.com and the box-office at the casino........Our future schedule includes working assignments in Las Vegas, meeting H.O.F. footballer Joe Montano in Scottsdale Arizona, Chicago and Corpus Christi Texas for the Gilberto Ramirez title fight 2/3 televised on ESPN/Deportes. Pacquiao News: Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, at Madison Square Garden for the Lomachenko fight, told members of the media that he was working to line up Manny Pacquiao for a fight but the problem was taking into consideration the boxing legends as a Senator in the Philippine Senate. A few days ago, it was reported that the search was in for April and the first name mentioned was Marquez and the old warhorse reportedly turned down an offer of one hundred million dollars. They have met 4 times and I talked to people who would like to see them go at it for a 5th time. Most of the speculation centers on a rematch with Jeff Horn in Las Vegas. It was reported that Horn would fight Terrence Crawford but surveyed fans thought the proposed would be a mismatch and not draw the numbers Top Rank and ESPN needs to call it a financial success....regardless of the opponent, Teddy Atlas won?t be at ringside; that?s a safe bet and a huge loss. Our speculative hunch is Horn; Happy Birthday Manny (12/17) and Merry Christmas everyone.......Until Next Time! Click here to view a list of other articles written by Don Smith. |
