WBO super featherweight world champion Vasyl Lomachenko of Ukraine weighed in at 129 lbs while Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba came in at 128.4 lbs during the official weighin Friday for their mouth-watering encounter Saturday night at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York.
Lomachenko, 29, (9-1-0, 7KOs) will defend his WBO title against Rigondeaux, 37, (17-0-0, 11KOs), the current WBA super world bantamweight world champion who moved up two divisions to challenge the Ukrainian. Rigondeaux who had never weight above 122 lbs, was at his heaviest in his entire career Friday.
Lomachenko and Rigondeaux won two Olympic gold medals each and their match Saturday marked the first time in boxing history that such bemedalled athletes will meet inside the squared circle.
Both are slick and highly technical with very high boxing IQ although Rigondeaux is more defensive and throw fewer but highly precise punches while Lomachenko is known for his wide variety of offensive repertoire and and throws endless amount of punches from all angles.
Rigondeaux won his first world title in his 7th fight and he fashioned his most famous victory against then fighter of the year Nonito Donaire Jr on April 13, 2013. Lomachenko fought in world championships in all his fights except in his debut although he lost to Orlando Salido by split decision in his first attempt for a world crown.
The referee for Saturday's fight will be Steve Willis of New York. The judges will be Steve Weisfeld of New Jersey, Glenn Feldman of Connecticut and Kevin Morgan of New York.
