AROY LOSES IN CONTROVERSIAL

Philippine minimum weight champion Alex Aroy lost in his bid to wrest the WBC International title from South Africa?s Zukisani Kwayiba at the Carousel near Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, by a majority seven round decision.
Filipinos regarded what happened when the lights mysteriously went out and the officials decided to end the bout and go to the scorecards as a typical hometown caper.
It was, according to the Filipinos camp, a sudden and suspicious power failure at a time when Aroy appeared to be getting the better of the champion. The fight was interrupted at the start of the seventh round and the WBC officials decided to go to the scorecards.
Two hometown judges scored it for the South African while a third judge Joseph Chaane had the fight an even 67-67 which Super Sports boxing writer Ron Jackson said was ?probably a much better reflection of the action.?
Jackson reported that in a battle of southpaws both fighters missed with ?wild, swinging punches? in the first two rounds but in the next two rounds Aroy who had battled to make the weight picked up the pace and according to Jackson scored with ?some good shots to the body? and at that stage Kawyiba ?appeared to lose interest in the fight. ?
However, Jackson said the South African came back in round five to score with some straight rights to the head and did the same thing at the end of the sixth but with Aroy tiring there was very little in it and Jackson said the bout was developing into an ?interesting contest.?
The 21 year old South African who won the title with a tenth round TKO over another Filipino Gabriel Pumar when the fight was stopped after Pumar suffered a cut over his left eye is undefeated and improved his record to 11-0 with 6 knockouts.
Aroy was coming off a sixth round technical decision loss to the highly promising and undefeated Milan Melindo last February 24 dropped to 12-5-1 with 6 knockouts. Aroy won the Philippine light flyweight title with a fourth round knockout over Dennis Juntillano on November 22, 2006.
