Arizona Boxing News & Notes with Don Smith: Boxing Fans Awaits Changes, Knockout at the D & More

PhilBoxing.com

Boxing Fans, Our last column listed a few suggestions and complaints forwarded to the Arizona Boxing/MMA Commission to help Executive Director Juan Rivera and his associates update rules and regulations governing the sport. Mr. Rivera has indicated the study is near completion and ready for implementation upon approval from the commission. The majority of the suggestions and complaints came from our readers and we thank them for their insightful input.

ABNN hopes an announcement of the proposed changes is forthcoming at the next ?open to the public? scheduled monthly meeting on March 15th, 2017 (10 AM sharp) at 1110 West Washington in Phoenix. Sad to say, boxing fans rarely attend the monthly session even though the commission opens the mike to public to ask questions or make comments; it is a great opportunity to be heard and possibly make a difference-sitting on your hands shouldn?t be an option.

The feedback from our message to the commission was positive and we heard from boxing insiders and fans who hope the changes will address the safety of the athletes and the integrity of the sport.

Amateur Results: As promised, here is a list of the winners from the El Casino amateur boxing show held in Tucson, Arizona on March 4. Next Arizona Amateur Event: Fighters First Presents Boxing?s Future 4 on Saturday 3/11 in Buckeye, Arizona; 18701 W. Thomas Road. Show starts at 1 PM and organizers expect 25 bouts; ABNN will be in Las Vegas on that date and we extend our apology to F-1 boxing for our unavoidable absence.

Boxing Notes: ABNN received a call from Jesus Ramos, brother/trainer of Arizona welterweight Abel Ramos and the affable boxing figure assured us that his brother has fully recovered from cuts, lumps and bruises sustained from his titanic battle with Ukrainian Ivan Baranchyk (15-0-10 knockouts on Showtime 2/10 of this year. Some scribes are calling the fight a contender for fight of the year and everyone I talked to thought it was a much better match up than the over hyped Danny Garcia/Keith Thurman championship contest televised on CBS, recently with collaboration from Showtime. 2 good rounds don?t count as a memorable fight.

JR told ABNN, his brother would like a rematch with Ivan and Team Ramos is convinced a win is quite possible in a rematch if their fighter decides to follow a different strategy and box the Ukrainian instead of slugging it out with the power punching Baranchyk. Abel, according to Jesus, hopes to line up a bout in May. Members of the Ramos Family will be in Buckeye, Arizona to watch Jesus Jr. box at the F-1 boxing event on Saturday, March 11. We wish Abel and his family the best.

Also, Phoenix featherweight Edward Ceballos ( Fuentes Boxing) 4-1-1-2 knockouts has recovered from an accidental head butt incident and is ready for ring action. He was hoping to fight on the March 31 card at the Legends Event Center in Phoenix; but, the event has been postponed and expected to be re-booked at the same venue; sometime in April?.Chris Sullivan (Ramos Boxing) will announce his intention to turn professional soon, good prospect!

RJJ Show: The popular ?Knockout at the D? boxing series produced by Roy Jones Jr. Promotions returns to Las Vegas on Saturday, March 11 at the Downtown Las Vegas Event Center. ABNN will be on hand to watch the action that includes Arizona lightweight Ivan De La Madrid (2-1-1 knockout) meeting Nevada prospect Sal Lopez (4-0) on the undercard.

Fight Night at the D has a history of providing upsets and an affordable evening of entertainment. The event will not be televised; so, be prepared to gas up the car and take the drive from Phoenix to Las Vegas.

In total, 6 bouts are scheduled with featherweight Rico Ramos (26-5-13 knockouts) taking on Erik Ruiz (16-5-6 knockouts) in the Main Event scheduled for 10 rounds. The co-main features Las Vegas favorite Randy Moreno Ochoa (8-0-7 knockouts) against upset minded Thomas Herrera (10-16-7 knockouts in a 6 round super featherweight bout.

Under Card: In a six round contest, Max Ornelas (7-0-3 knockouts) hopes to defeat veteran Pedro Melo (17-4-2-8 knockouts) in their bantamweight bout. California welterweight Flavio Rodriguez lays his undefeated record (6-0-5 knockouts) on the line against Texan David Thomas (6-1-2 knockouts) in a 6 round tussle. In a 4 round lightweight contest, lightweight Marina Ramirez (2-1) goes toe to toe with Canadian Judy Pereira (1-0). Tickets are available through Ticket Master and at the DLEC box-office on the day of the event?.see you there!

Iron Boy MMA 5: Iron Boy Promotions publicist Emily Pandelakis was gracious to forward the bout sheet for Iron Boy?s MMA V pro/am show at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix on Friday March 10. 1st bout begins at 6 pm and doors at the venue open at 5 PM. The show features 4 professional bouts and 9 amateur battles. All bouts are subject to change! * We are unable to inform our readers of listed performer?s records or represented weight divisions. Pro Matches: Estevan Payan vs. Kyle Steward ? Nolan Hyland vs. Jimmy Scully ? Jose Palencia vs. Edgar Chairez ? Ace Martinez vs. Peter Quezada. Amateur Bouts: Junior Cortez vs. Jaime Carskden ? Johnny Nguyen vs. Michael Trujillo ? Jose Castanon vs. Josh Disilvera - Steve Coard vs. Wes Pierce ? Jarrel Madrid vs. Austin Solari ? Tj Whiles vs. Zack Gomez ? Kelly Willard vs. Lexy Johnson. Ticket prices range from $29.00 (General Admission) - $39.00 (rows 9-13) - $54.00 (Rows 1-8). All tickets are subject to service charge. The official Iron Boy MMA V weigh-In is set for Thursday March 9 at 5 PM at Sushi Sonora located at 6544 W. Thomas Road Phoenix, Arizona.

Benavidez News: In our last column, we reported that Arizona born super middleweight David Benavidez was mentioned as a combatant in a super middleweight title eliminator bout that could lead to a world title bout for the 20 year old pugilist who, by winning a world title, would join six time world champion and fellow native Arizona fighter Louie Espinoza as the third fighter born in Arizona to win a world title.

His dream to capture a world title will remain on hold, for now, as the WBC has decided to pit #2 ranked American Anthony Dirrell (30-1-1-24 knockouts) vs. #1 ranked Englishman Cullum Smith (22-0-17 knocks) for the vacant WBC super-middleweight title formerly held by Badou Jack who forfeited the crown over weight issues. The pairing came as a result of a bidding war won by TGB promotions, representing Dirrell. A venue and date remains up in the air for the title bout. The winning purse bid was announced at $1.603 million.

According to Jose Benavidez Sr., father and trainer, Team Benavidez won?t rush the power punching prospect who is sparring with GGG in the Ukrainian?s preparation for a fight with Daniel Jacobs on March 18 in New York. David has an offer to join Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez?s camp on 3/14 to help Canelo in his preparation for his PPV but with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6 at T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Benavidez is scheduled to fight seasoned veteran Rogelio ?Porky? Medina (37-7-31 knockouts in New York on April 29. David is currently ranked #8 & #10 in two different ranking polls. Medina will be a tough test for the youngster.

When asked about the health of Jose Jr., Dad said he is looking healthy and soon he will test the Wounded Knee for evaluation to determine when and if his son could resume his ring career.

More News: According to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, WBO welterweight champion and Philippine Senator Manny Pacquiao won?t be fighting contender Amir Khan in the United Arab Emirate or anywhere else. So, back to square one and the ongoing saga is beginning to mimic the script of a bizarre soap opera???Iron Boy 38 is scheduled for April 22 not on April 28 as rumored. How the rumor got started is amusing. I visited Fuentes boxing gym recently and two boxers told me they were set to fight on the card, April 28 at the Celebrity Theatre: so, , I wished them good luck because( to date) the Theatre is dark on that night; happy trails?..Arizona fighters Carlos Castro and Francisco C De Vaca are scheduled to fight on the Iron Boy 38 card after recovering from recent injuries. Iron Boy is talking to middleweight Andrew ?The Fighting Pride of Phoenix? Hernandez about headlining the 4/22 show at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. ?..Good to hear that the question of the date and venue location for New Zealand?s WBO Heavyweight Champion Joseph Parker?s first world title defense against England?s Hughie Fury has been settled. The title tiff will happen on May 6 at Auckland?s Vector Arena. Ironically on the same date as Chavez/Alvarez title bout at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. No word on what network will televise the heavyweight title bout; but, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is reportedly brokering the television deal. Duco Events is the official promoter and we thank them for keeping us in the loop. The Canelo/Chavez bout can be seen on HBO PPV and closed Circuit. Golden Boy has revised their earlier statement describing the event as a sellout; there are limited seats available according to a recent press release; they won?t last long? Phoenix southpaw bantamweight Alexis Zazueta (9-0) is working out at Fuentes Gym in Phoenix and he hopes to fight on the April 22 Iron Boy show at the Celebrity Theatre aft a ring layoff of almost 13 months. ?. The Arizona Boxing Commission is doubling down on the checking of prospective promoter?s financial health and wealth status with a very scrutinizing eye before the show and promoter can be approved; a few bounced checks will suggest caution?.. One reader questioned ABBN for asking the Commission about granting a license to convicted felons (with an emphasis on sex offenders) so they could work in the Arizona Boxing Industry. The question was received from Tina Mendez, a regular reader? ?..Until Next Time!
