Arizona Boxing News & Notes With Don Smith: Brown Shooting Update, Rosales, Martinez Win By Don Smith PhilBoxing.com Fri, 16 Dec 2016 2020 Arizona 2020 Olympic boxing hopeful Moises Rosales (138 lbs. division) after winning 1st place trophy in boxing tournament held in Phoenix (12/10) poses with Arizona Boxing News & Notes Editor Don Smith. Boxing Fans, We received a carefully edited case report from the Chicago Police Department on 12/14 detailing the 12/3/2016 fatal shooting of 25 year old undefeated welterweight Boxer Edward ?Bad Boy? Brown (20-0-16 knockouts) and the wounding of his 19 year old female driver (cousin) around 1:10 a.m. on that tragic day (Saturday). The release of this report gives readers a deeper and clearer understanding of a tragedy that has rocked the boxing world and especially the boxing community of Chicago, still grieving over his passing. The suspect(s) remains free and anyone with information leading to the capture or arrest of person(s) associated with the execution style murder of Edward Brown is subject to receive a sizeable ($3,000.00) and growing monetary reward. In our last column, we incorrectly suggested the female passenger was Brown?s longtime girlfriend and in reality it was his cousin who was the driver; we apologize for the printed misinformation from an informant thought to be knowledgeable and credible. It happens and once again, we apologize and we are glad that is girlfriend is alive and well. Here is the official summarized incident report (HZ537965), released to our assignment desk by the Chicago Police Department. Event # 00763 occurred at 3235 W. Warren Blvd. in Chicago, Illinois on 12/3, 2016; All the names of persons involved, except Mr. Brown ,were kept a secret in the document submitted to us to protect their identify and physical being. ?Responding officers to a call of shots fired at Chicago address. Upon arrival, responding officers found Edward Brown (Victim and Complainant) and girlfriend (Victim and Complainant) inside Ms. (cousin?s name withheld) vehicle. Edward Brown (Victim and Complainant) sustained a gunshot wound to his head, left hand and left buttock. He was treated and transported by CFD 34 to Mt. Sinai Hospital under the care of Dr. Zavelski in critical condition. Brown?s cousin (Victim and Complainant) sustained two gunshot wounds to her left thigh. She was treated and transported by CFD 10 to Mt. Sinai Hospital under the care of Dr. Mamnami in serious condition. Cousin (Victim and Complainant) related she was attempting to park her car when a Silver sedan pulled next to her and started shooting. The offending vehicle possibly had a Wisconsin plate. Edward Brown (Victim and Complainant) was seated in the back seat. A third person (Victim and Complainant) was seated in the front seat. Mr. (name withheld), Victim and Complainant, was not injured. Two other vehicles belonging to a fourth person (Victim and Complainant) and fifth person (Victim and Complainant) were struck by gunfire. The victims were given the VINS. Responding officers toured the area with negative results.? * An estimated 16-20 shots were fired at the scene by the shooter(s). Model of handgun used wasn?t identified in the incident report nor was the recovered at the scene. Close friend (like a brother) and fellow Chicago boxer Nathaniel Gallimore (15-1-1-12 knockouts) knockouts will be wearing a special commemorative patch on his boxing trunks as a tribute to the fallen warrior when he (Gallimore) meets super welterweight Angel Baez (15-0-1) on 12/17 at the Las Vegas Event Center in their CBS Sports Network televised bout. Several of Brown?s boxing friends from Chicago are expected to follow the example of Nathaniel Gallimore and honor their boxing comrade with symbolic gestures of love and respect for what he accomplished inside the ring and out. Brown was memorialized and laid to rest recently in Chicago and funeral expenses were partially covered by an Edward ?Bad Boy? GO Fund Me account created by co-manager Mike Cerricola on behalf of Tanika Rainey (Brown?s Aunt). Brown is survived by his three year old daughter Kayla who is the benefactor of a huge Christmas toy collection drive initiated on 12/12 by Sam Colonna, trainer, manager cut man and owner of Sam Colonna Boxing, MMA and Fitness. Sam knew Brown quite well in his capacity as a trainer, mentor and friend. We chatted briefly via telephone and he said his gym on the second floor at 2600 w. 35th Street in Chicago will host a party on Saturday (12/17) to collect toys for Kayla and the drive will continue through 12/22 at which time the gifts will be taken to the child. Hours before going to print I engaged in a three way conversation with co-manager Mike Cerricola and Victory Promotions publicist Emily Pandelakis and they told me Brown donated his spleen, lungs, kidneys and heart and his heart was successfully transplanted into a patient who will continue to enjoy life thanks to the gift from Edward Brown who will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him and watched him in the ring?amen! Martinez & Rosales: Last year a local boxing manager called me out for what he described as not supporting Arizona boxers in my column and he went on to state that it was my duty and obligation to so. I didn?t really pay attention to him because his managerial experience and boxing knowledge can easily fit in a thimble after typing his boxing resume on a single sheet of bathroom tissue and folding it several times and placing in the sewing accessory. I don?t need to publicize his name, we know each other very well and his nonchalant approach to his fighters? career is shameful and career busting. I do respect the skills of several young Arizona fighters who are role models for young people to follow and I also pay homage to those who serve as goodwill ambassadors for the sport. The list of Professional Arizona fighters I have praised in my column space is quite lengthy; but I have also taken issue with some local fighters, trainers and managers who, in my opinion, disgrace the sport by not serving it with the proper respect. Sometime in the future, I may choose to vent and write a ?tell all? book or column piece unveiling my subjective critique of boxing within the state of Arizona; constructive and valid criticism is always helpful when taken with the right attitude not the proverbial grain of salt. For now, I would like focus on two young amateur Arizona boxers who get very little attention from local media despite the fact that both of them hope to compete for Arizona and the United States in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I am referring to 14 year old Moises Rosales and 18 year old Fernando Martinez. Fernando is a high school senior and he took up boxing at age 9 under the coaching guidance of Juan Mendoza (Mendoza Boxing) who mentors the student athlete and together they have won a slew of boxing medals, most recently the Gold at the US Nationals held recently in Kansas City, Missouri. The only difficult bout for him in the tourney was when he faced a tall tough Southpaw in the semifinals; however, Martinez managed to win a hard fought 3-2 decision. His other wins during competition included a 5-0 victory and a TKO win. His golden win in KC earned him a trip to Colorado, US Olympic training headquarters, for special training on January 9. After a stint in Colorado, Fernando will head to Hamburg Germany to compete in the 2017 AIBA World Championships August 25-September 3. Fernando earns additional points after time he wins or places in the top 3 of every National, Continental or International tournament. His accumulated points and performance in the Olympic box offs will determine whether or not he boards the plane to Tokyo as a member of the Us Boxing team in 2020 or goes as a tourist on his own money. Martinez is a prize fighter coveted by promoters and boxing managers. Coach Mendoza has been forced to fend off several attempts to steal the 114 lb. Elite fighter. In addition to working with Fernando, Juan works a full time job and is beginning to hunt for PR coverage for his prized pupil and he also is looking for sponsors who can donate to his nonprofit boxing gym for the purpose of covering travel expenses and the cost of updating exercise and boxing equipment. I like his chances of making the team because he has a strong support team consisting of Coach Mendoza and his parents who support his effort 100%. Above all, Fernando has the true grit and desire to become a world champion and he tunes out distractions; but, he does occasionally take a respite and play video games. I haven?t asked him if his play list includes ?Ready 2 Rumble? or ?Super Punch out.? Moises Rosales lacks the boxing experience of Martinez who is 4 years older and Moises currently weighs 24 pounds more than the 114 pound Martinez. There are other differences such as personality. Rosales is more outgoing and at 14, he hasn?t gone enough personal experiences like some kids his age; but he didn?t lose an older brother and that type of a tragedy can leave a somber and sobering effect on a child growing up and it is a memory never forgotten. He is the middle child of 3 surviving Rosales children and Mama Bernice is very protective of them and 5 nights a weeks , Dad (Moy) and the entire family travel to Funtes Gym to watch Gym owner and trainer Jesus Fuentes aka Chuey works with the 14 year old who isn?t afraid to spar with older and bigger fighters. At a recent local smoker, Bernice Rosales worried that her boxing son was fighting a young man a year or two years older than Moises and 10 lbs. heavier, I reminded her that he was fighting much heavier and more opponents at his training home, Fuentes Boxing Gym just East of 16th Street between Thomas Road and McDowell Road in Phoenix. She relaxed a bit and continued to watch the fight with a little bit more ease after she thought about my message to her. Moises took up boxing at age 6; but, he didn?t start an amateur career until less than two years ago. His most prestigious boxing accomplishment so far is winning the 2016 Gene Lewis Tournament. He also won the Silver Gloves Tourney in his weight division, no small feat. Everyone who has seen him workout is very impressed with the young fighter who has power and listens to his coach. He turns 18 at the time the 2020 Olympic tryouts start and his parents are checking out what it will take for him to qualify for the 2020 Olympics. This is a family very supportive of their brother and son and I wouldn?t bet against his chances. Anyone who plays an accordion and boxes has to be tough. I think Moises is the only boxer that I know who lays the squeeze box. His doting mother forced me to listen to a sample of his playing and I was impressed. To be honest, I didn?t go out the next day to a music store and buy a tape featuring the accordion. Moises has a future if he keeps his power as he grows; he delivers some awesome body shots for a kid that won?t be 15 until June of 2017. According to rumors, Journeyman promotions is interested in signing the 24 year old fighter; but he has a manager and promoter so their interest has peaked and faded. Victor enrolled in Truck Driving School as a backup plan to support his family while the impasse continues?..My vacation in Canada has been postponed until New Year?s Eve. Smoker Results: Boxing Coach and Amateur Boxing promoter Ricky Ricardo graciously invited me to his 12/10 boxing smoker event at Greenfield Elementary School in Phoenix and the event, for the most part, offered very entertaining contests. 14 year old High School student Moises Rosales (Fuentes Gym) and Christopher Romero (IronGloves Boxing) were awarded best bout honors with Rosales winning the 138 pound contest via UD. Fighters first Academy boxing in Buckeye, Arizona won Team Trophy by winning 3 out of 3 bouts. If I were able to cast a vote for Best Bout runner-up bout, I would weigh in favor of Sebastian Mitry (Fight First Academy Boxing) who defeated Esau Valerio (MCSO Boxing) in a rematch won by Mitry who lost a controversial split decision to Valerio at the Golden Gloves Tournament earlier this year with a verdict that made me shake my head in disbelief. Here are the names of the other winners. Ronaldo Plata (80lbs. unattached), Esteban Inzunza (85 lbs.-Fight First Academy), Anthony Gonzales (125 lbs. ? El Martillo Boxing), Oscar Lopez (115 lbs. ? Madison Boxing), Denyce Salga (95 lbs. ? Fight First Academy), Anthony Cabanyog (106 lbs. ? Madison Boxing), Jerome Jones (Novice 155 lbs. ? Brown said he is ready to start making money as a fighter now; but, after watching his performance, he should hold off until he gains more confidence and sharpens his skills immensely. Next smoker at Greenfield Elementary is scheduled for Saturday 2/25. Short last minute Jabs: Ryan Riddell, (2-0) told me he has an upcoming fight in Arizona on January 28; but, his announcement came with no specifics. Boxers Manny Pacquiao and Andrew Hernandez celebrate birthdays this month: Manny turns 38 while Hernandez celebrates his 31st?. Heavyweight Andy Ruiz wants a rematch with Joseph Parker after he lost a SD to the New Zealander in his home country?.looking at upcoming televised fights; we recommend the Frampton vs. Santa Cruz fight, January 28 on Showtime. Rising young Phenom David Benavidez may be added to the card. No word on the whereabouts or health of his older brother Jose Jr. He seems to have vanished and Top Rank wasn?t able to tell me anything about his future with TR??..Until Next Time!
