Arizona Boxing News & Notes With Don Smith: Ed ?Bad Boy? Brown Mourned, Knockout Night at the D

PhilBoxing.com

Ed Brown.

Boxing Fans, The boxing community is mourning the tragic and horrific death of budding superstar welterweight boxer Ed ?Bad Boy? Brown (20-0-16 knockouts) who was shot on early Saturday Morning (1:10 a.m.-12/4) while sitting a in a parked car in the 3200 block of West Warren in Chicago with a 19 year old woman who suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to her left leg. Brown was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago Sunday 12/5. Co-manager Cameron Dunkin is on record of describing the Black female passenger as a cousin while another printed source lists her as Brown?s sister. ABNN made calls to three Brown acquaintances and they insist that Brown was with his girlfriend at the time of his death. It is a moot point; but, part of an ongoing mystery that surrounds a murder case that remains unsolved. Special thanks to Chicago PD for sending me a brief summary of the case to date. They expedited my request and sent it within two days instead of the five days allowed under their mandated process, greatly appreciated!

According to published reports, the two were together when a silver colored vehicle pulled alongside the parked car and someone inside the suspicious second vehicle started firing shots spraying the car and several rounds hit Brown with the fatal bullet striking the head and ending the life of the victim. The suspect(s) drove away and is the subject of an intense manhunt by Chicago Police. A reward fund, initiated by community activist Andrew Holmes, has been posted for information leading to the capture and conviction of the shooter or and any accomplice (he or she) involved in the cowardly act.

Brown fought twice in Arizona; June of 2015 at the Renaissance Hotel in Glendale and two months later at the We Ko Pa Casino (Ft. McDowell Arizona) 33.8 miles East of Phoenix. The Casino fight was promoted by Roy Jones Jr Promotions; so, I asked RJJ spokesperson Lisa Veltre (VP of Operations at the Roy Jones Fight Academy) if she would share her memory of the young fighter: ?The RJJ Team was devastated to learn that Ed Brown was shot & killed. It was an honor to watch him fight and witness his talent in the ring; such a talented fighter/future prospect taken from the boxing community too soon.?

Publicist Emily Pandelakis (Iron Boy Promotions, Cameron Dunkin & Victory Promotions) worked with Brown on several occasions and she emailed the following statement in regards to the passing of Ed Brown: ?Ed was the first fighter that Victory Promotions signed. He was a pleasure to work with and know, and I am heartbroken at such a huge loss for so many in boxing and in his community in Chicago. He loved his life, and he was loved by many in his life.?

I covered both of Ed?s fights in Arizona and I remember asking him if he gave himself the nickname of ?Bad Boy? and he said ?Yeah? with a big grin on his face. Behind his memorable smile was a personal history filled with numerous tragic and turbulent moments that he had to endure while growing up in a tough gang infested Chicago neighborhood. He once told a reporter ?I love Chicago, I?ll love Chicago until the day I die.? All attempts to get Ed to live elsewhere, for his own safety, went nowhere according to members of his management team. During a memorial for the slain fighter held on Tuesday 12/6 in Chicago, Co-Manager Mike Cericola told the gathered mourners: ?Inside the ring was the safest place for him. They could not beat him in that ring.?

At the age of 12 in 2003, he lost his mother when she was trampled to death in the infamous stampede at the E2 nightclub in Chicago. She was one of 21 persons who were crushed while trying to flee a serious fight scene as pepper spray was deployed. The crowd panicked and a deadly stampede resulted.
Hard times were a recurring and unpleasant part of his life. His father spent Brown?s childhood locked up in prison and his brother was locked in a jail cell on the day Ed was shot. According to a source, Brown visited his incarcerated sibling hours before the fatal shooting.

The day of 12/3 wasn?t the first time Brown was on the receiving end of bullets. He had been first shot in the chest at a night club one week after winning his first professional bout. He returned six months later, won two more fights and was shot again, this time on a party bus after two men got into a fight and one of them started shooting.

Third time wasn?t a charm; he was shot again during a drive-by just before the 2012 Olympic Trials, when Brown was expected to make the United States boxing squad. On December 14, 2012 he celebrated his professional debut in a bout against Dontre King in Cicero Illinois with a TKO victory.

Manager Mike Cericola has started a GoFund Me account at: Ed ?Bad Boy? Brown (https://www.gofundme.com//72-ed-bad-boy-brown)? Cericola promises potential contributors that the account is under his name and very cent will be used to help the family cover funeral expenses?.please give generously if you have the means.

Knout Out at the D: Boxing fans looking for an exciting Christmas gift to give to another fan, might consider purchasing a pair of tickets to the Knockout at the D show in Las Vegas on December 17 at the Downtown Las Vegas Event Center. Roy Jones Jr and his boxing elves present a headline title fight between Texan Oscar Cantu (14-0-1 knockout) and hard punching Filipino sensation ?Mighty Aston Palicte (21-2-19 knockouts). The heavy handed Palicte will try to win Cantu?s NABF Super Flyweight Title and also win the vacant WBO inter-Continental Super Flyweight Championship in a bout scheduled for 10 rounds. CBS Sports Network will televise the Main Event and the Co-Main plus a third bout. In addition, the undercard will introduce 4 bouts featuring young pugilists with championship aspirations. It appears to be a competitive card and without further delay, here is the lineup for an evening of professional boxing that starts at 5:00 p.m. with doors open at 4:00 p.m. Tickets prices range from $15.00 General Admission to ringside $50.00. The Knockout Night at the D series was developed in partnership with the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center and Neon Star Media?Edward Ceballos is back in action on the rising stars.

Gallimore will be wearing a special patch on his trunks as a tribute to his fallen friend and fellow Chicagoan, welterweight boxer Ed Brown who was murdered in the Windy City, execution style, on December 3. The bout is scheduled for 8 rounds and it is expected that Gallimore will dedicate his performance to the memory of his friend and Brown?s 3 year old surviving daughter-Kayla Brown whose name is tattooed on her late father?s wrist.

Also Televised: 6 round 147 lb. bout-Flavor Rodriguez (5-0-4 knockouts) vs. Dilan Loza (5-0-3 knockouts) Non Televised Undercard: 6 rounds 147 lbs. Max Ormelas (6-0-3 knockouts) vs. Jorge Perez (6-4-3 knockouts). Arizona Boxing News & Notes plans to attend this event and we hope to see at least one or two of our readers at the venue. If the guy who flipped me off at the super market appears at the DLEC venue; we hope he is missing at least one finger?.you know the one I mean. Good seats are still available; so what are you waiting for!

Iron Boy MMA: Arizona Boxing News & Notes will be out of town on 12/18; therefore, we will miss the Iron Boy MMA event at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix scheduled on the same day. Our absence doesn?t mean you can?t go or we shouldn?t tell our readers who is appearing on the card according to Iron Boy Publicist Emily Pandelakis who was gracious enough to forward us an updated list. I am being so nice in this column because it is close to Christmas and I could use a few things I didn?t get last year; not even a recycled Christmas Card. Professional Bouts: Ray Robinson vs. Kasey Yates, Nolan Hyland vs. Gabe Rodriguez, Richard Mahan vs. Kevin Natividad, Manny Villarreal vs. Andy Valera. Amateur Bouts: Ronee Dizon vs. Michael Trujillo, Gabriel Ochsenfeld vs. Jack Whitson, Steve Corard vs. Adrian Rascon, Dale Fuller vs. Brian Lopez, Daniel Flores vs. John Nguyen, Brian Olivas vs. Eric Arias, Brendan Trujillo vs. Coty Solatorio, Valerie Quintero vs. Vanessa Morales, Josh Disilvera vs. Patrick Ayala.

Short Jabs: Native American super middleweight Albert Alvarez (Sells Arizona) is scheduled to fight in Nogales Mexico on December 16. Little brother Emilio was preparing to fight on Madison Boxing Coach Ricky Ricardo?s Olympic Style boxing smoker event (Saturday December 10) at Greenfield Elementary School (7009 South 10th Street in Phoenix) but he will skip that show and catch the next USA Boxing Arizona sanctioned calendar affair. Admission for the Greenfield event is $10.00 for adults, first bout starts at 2 PM?..Cesar Valenzuela plans to fight twice in the next 60 days, once in Mexico and once in the USA. Details when is signing becomes official. He will spend Christmas with his finance in Phoenix?..circulating rumors about Iron Boy fighter Paul ?Ziggy? Romero signing a national promotional contract are untrue according to a spokesperson representing his management team. Ziggy will fight for a WBU tittle on the Iron Boy 37 Card at the Celebrity Card in Phoenix in February?.. Former Arizona boxer Jerry ?School Boy? Cheatham, a dedicated friend of Phoenix middleweight Andrew ?Hurricane? Hernandez is miffed over the fact that the Phoenix pugilist has been stripped of his two 160 lb. Middleweight title belts because the soon to be 31 year old stepped up in weight class recently to fight as a super middleweight and lost by knockout. Jerry says his friend was stripped of the belts because he didn?t notify the two organizations of his fight with WBO NABF super middleweight champion Jesse Hart; that is Jerry?s editorial opinion on the subject. Cheatham thinks if I complain in my column about the stripping of Andrew?s titles, the enforcing organizations will grant Hernandez a chance to get his titles back by fighting the new Champ. You should have been a spider on the wall and heard his demand for justice as if I was a boxing commissioner or a Supreme Court Justice. My take on the matter is Andrew isn?t a true super middleweight and he should have never stepped up in weight class to fight Hart who is a legitimate beast?..Phoenix lightweight David Courtney (1-5) fought in Vegas recently and wasn?t able to make it through the first round. Word to the wise: don?t fight someone who is out of your league; either leave the sport or be ready to defend yourself.

More Stuff: Phoenix boxing favorite Adrian Servin is recovering from dental problems and will be ready for a bout on the February Iron Boy 37 card at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. In the meantime, Adrian and his dad (Mike) may travel to Las Vegas on 12/17 to watch the super flyweight title fight at the Downtown Las Vegas Center; promoted by Roy Jones Promotions??Fight Hard Promotions has been talking to Mayweather Promotions about possibly collaborating on a boxing show in Phoenix at the Legends Event Center sometime in March?..Silver Gloves Regionals are scheduled for January 5-8 at the Compton Sheriff Youth Activities league Facility in Compton California. If you want to participate as an athlete, coach or spectator, call Joe Zanders at 310-920-1809 or 310-638-1689 for more information?..Arizona Boxing News & Notes will take a much needed break from 12/20 to 1/3/take a much needed break from 12/20 to 1/3/017?.. Adonis Garcia is a boxing glove maker and he wants everyone to view his products on his website: >www.adonisgarcia.com we aren?t endorsing his work; but he is a local guy and works as a police detective; so what it heck, check it out and love it or hate it?.It doesn?t matter to us; use good judgment?..lightweight Mario Macias (Fuentes Boxing) suffered a TKO at the hands of title contender Toka Kahn Clary in Rhode Island on December 2?.Andrew Hernandez has been contacted about a possible fight in Denmark next year?? Our prayers go out to coach Chris Alvarez (MCSO Boxing), he lost his mother recently and there is a big hole in his heart. If you know him and see him?give him a big hug from all of us?.. Until Next Time!
