GELLO-ANI CHECKS REPORT OF SOLIS AVOIDING BATAWANG TITLE FIGHT
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 06 Sep 2007
Well known promoter Sammy Gello-ani is checking on a report that IBF light flyweight champion Ulises Solis whose title defense against Bert Batawang was initially postponed because of a supposed injury suffered by the champion, is now avoiding the Filipino.
The attention of Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today was drawn to a post on the Philboxing.com forum which pointed to a story by Dan Rafael of ESPN in which he said the October 4 fight of Solis was being offered to Giovanni Segura, a top contender also promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank when in fact Batawang was lined up for the title fight.
Solis who has a record of 25-1-2 with 19 knockouts scored a one-punch eighth round KO over Filipino Rodel Mayol who dropped the champion in the sixth round and had him staggering around the ring but then got careless and paid the price.
Mayol in a recent appearance on Kababayan LA hosted by popular Jannelle So on LA 18 said he had trained for the Solis fight only for a couple of weeks, had no good sparring partners in Las Vegas, was virtually left to fend for himself and was lonely.
Rafael reported that Solis was to headline Versus "Fight Night" at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas on October 4 and although Gello-ani said they were asked to "standby" with Batawang who remained in Los Angeles and continued training at the Wild Card Gym, ESPN reported that Solis’ opponent had not been determined and that Segura’s name had come up.
However, boxrec.com reported that Batawang, who has a record of 50-6 with 34 knockouts, is scheduled to battle Solis for the title at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on October 4 prompting Gello-ani to seek clarification because of the conflicting reports.
