MEL BAKER DEDICATES FIGHT TO BLAZE ALEXANDER
PhilBoxing.com Thu, 13 Oct 2016
 Mel Baker.
TOOWOOMBA'S MEL BAKER WILL DEDICATE HER OCTOBER TWENTY TWO BOUT TO BLAZE ALEXANDER. Baker, who is scheduled to face Monthida Rattanachai, was a close friend of Blaze Alexander who tragically passed away over the weekend in a swimming accident at Coomba Falls.
Mel and Smithy's TGW gym amateur boxer Billy Holland, who was Blaze's best friend, were with Blaze when the accident occurred on Sunday.
They desperately searched for him, sadly his body was recovered the next day.
"We were all deeply saddened by the death of Blaze Alexander, who was a member of Smithy's TGW Gym and trained with Leon Spain's Muay Thai team," Brendon Smith.
"All of our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
"There was no pressure either way on Mel to fight on October twenty two.
"My primary concern is her wellbeing.
"She's a grown woman and very capable of making her own decisions and I was happy to support her what ever she wanted to do.
"She reached out to me saying she wanted the fight and she wanted to do it in Blaze's honour.
"It's her call and I'll do all I can to help her."
Baker is scheduled to meet Brisbane's Monthida Ratanachai of Brisbane in a 4x2min round bout. It will be her second professional bout after losing to Queensland Champion April Adams in her debut in August.
"I contacted Brendon on Monday and said I wanted to go through with this fight," Baker said.
"For Blaze.
"He always supported me 100% he was there for my pro debut so I want to fight for him and show him what I can do.
"A special thanks to Brendon Smith who has been a great supporter of mine for a long time but he's really looked out for me in the past week.
"His words of advice and support in general has helped me through some difficult days.
"I'm looking forward to fighting and I hope I can earn my first professional victory.
