Arizona Boxing News & Notes With Smith: Rating 18 Undefeated boxers, Iron Boy 35 & Much More

PhilBoxing.com

David Benavidez.

Boxing Fans, as the calendar year nears closure, Arizona Boxing News & Notes would like to take a look at some of the remaining active undefeated boxers with 15 victories or more. In setting the bar at 15 wins, we have drawn up a list excluding numerous fighters who may make future unbeaten lists based on our minimum criteria. In determining who made our top 18 list, we used strength of opposition, boxing skills, power, Kentucky Wind age and solicited opinions from a group of know nothings to determine our 1-18 preferential pronouncements. It is okay to disagree with our picks unless you?re sober.

We are excluding undefeated Arizona boxers such as Carlos Castro (16-0), Trevor McCumby, and Victor Castro (17-0) for fear that Arizona Boxing News & Notes might be perceived as bias. Top Rank Prot?g? Jose Benavidez Jr; now a California resident, doesn?t make the list because he is recovering from being shot (knee & finger) while visiting his girlfriend in Phoenix. Benavidez refused to file charges against the unknown assailant who has managed to evade apprehension, a fact that baffles most fans and scribes.

Here is list of undefeated boxers we deem as arguably the best of male boxers with a 0 in the lost column; a mixture of young and veteran pugilists. (18) 19 year old California super middleweight/Lt Heavyweight David Benavidez (16-0-15 knockouts) started his career in Mexico with a soft boxing menu and has, bout by bout, taken on stronger foes and is recognized as a fighter who can be a future world champion if he keeps his head straight and continues to improve his defense. He has power plus and is very mature for his age; David?s next fight will be in December. (17) 23 year old southpaw super bantamweight Joseph Diaz (22-0) who has won a minor title is a slick fast hitting boxer with some power and is capable of boxing his way to a world title in a year or 2 if he remains patient. (16) 27 year old British southpaw middleweight Billy Joe Saunders (23-0) is the current WBO Middleweight Champion and rumored to be the next foe, or Pi?ata , for GGG. He gets little respect although he has fought and defeated quality foes including Andy Lee. His weakness is questionable power in comparison to division champs Gennady Golovkin and Saul Alvarez. (15) 36 year old Russian super lightweight Eduard Troyanovsky (25-0-22 knockouts) doesn?t get the publicity that others in his do; but, he is the IBF super lightweight champion and he can punch and defend. One thing he needs to do is fight outside of Russia more often. (14) Featherweight Jessie Magdaleno (23-0-17 knockouts) is a flashy and exciting las Vegas boxer who has speed and power. On November 5, he meets Nonito Donaire for Donaire?s WBO crown in the Co-Main on the Pacquiao/Vargas PPV event at the Thomas & Mack center in Las Vegas. (13) WBO Lightweight Champion Terry Flanagan (31-0-12 knockouts) is known to his British fans; but, virtually unknown outside of the UK. The 27 year old is smart in the ring and always well-conditioned. He is not the most exciting fighter to watch; but, he wins and wins. (12) WBO Super Middleweight Gilberto Ramirez (34-0-24 knockouts) is one of several fighters mentioned as a foe for Gennady Golovkin. He moves well and punches well from angles with a good display of footwork. At 25, he is still growing. (11) 26 year old IBF Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua (17-0-17 knockouts) won a gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics and he is one of 4 undefeated heavyweight champions. He has a tentative fight against a TBD opponent in December and a win could put him in a position to fight the winner of the Fury/Klitschko 11/28 title tussle in Germany. (10) a tie between Heavyweights Tyson Fury(25-0-18 knockouts) and Luis Ortiz (25-0-22 knockouts). Ortiz is a 36 year old banger who can end it with one punch. Fury stands 6? 9? and moves well for his size and underrated as a boxer. His height and reach are great advantages. (9) Tie Andre Ward (30-0-15 knockouts & Sergey Kovalev (30-0-1-26 knockouts) It seemed fair to settle the tie breaker in the ring and by coincidence they meet in Vegas on November 19and the winner holds the # 9 position while the loser leaves the undefeated ranks. Both men are champions and the fight should draw very well with PPV numbers. (8) WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder (37-0-36 knockouts is destroying everyone he takes on. Wilder doesn?t get the credit he deserves. (7) WBC welterweight champ Danny Garcia (32-0-18 takes too many punches sometimes and he relaxes his conditioning at times; but, his is poetry in motion when he is on (6)No one wants to fight bantamweight Champ Guillermo Rigondeaux because of his style which confuses most Despite the knock on him, he is a great champion and definitely earns the #6 spot (5)super lightweight Mikey Garcia (35-0-29 knockouts ) took a lot of time off to argue with Top Rank over the merits of his contract and that may have induced a bit of ring rust; but, he is one of Michael Carbajal?s favorites so that reference earns him fifth place on this prestigious list. Phoenix lightweight Ray Beltran (31-7-1-19 knockouts) has called out hall of famer and we will let our readers know if Garcia bites. (4) WBO Super Lightweight Champion Terence Crawford (29-0- 20 knockouts) is a very stylish fighter should be offered many big money fights down the road. We hear Mikey Garcia is eying him. His height and reach gives him a big advantage over most of his opponents: go Omaha. (3) WBA welterweight king Keith Thurman (27-0-22 knockouts) won his crown in 2015 and he usually dominates his opponent; however, some nights he takes too many punches. Despite taking an occasional vacation, he is a master in the ring. (2) Super flyweight Roman ?Chocolatito? Gonzalez (46-0-38 knockouts) earns the number 2 spot for his years of dominance in the flyweight division. He is a ring general and a true champion inside and outside of the ring. (1) Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin normally toys with his opponents and I can?t believe ?Canelo? Alvarez wants any part of a fighter whose record of 36 wins with 33 knockouts instills fear in anyone who has a grip on their sanity. Talk is they will fight in September of 2017; good luck, Canelo, I don?t believe Canelo and GGG will ever fight?time will tell!

Card Change: Emmanuel Quartey (20-2-19 knockouts) is unable to acquire a travel visa in the time required; so he won?t be fighting Hanzel ?Rude Boy? Martinez (23-2-19 knockouts) at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center on Friday, September 30. Instead, Martinez will be tangling with Erik Ruiz 15-5-1-6 knockouts for the vacant WBA International super bantamweight championship in a 10 round contest shown live on CBS Sports Network and internationally via ESPN (digital delay-check local listings). Broadcast time commences at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT.

The Co-Main features Tony Lopez (11-1-4 knockouts) goes toe to toe with Stephon ?Showstopper? Young (14-0-3-6 knockouts) for the vacant WBA NABA bantamweight title in a 10 round contest. WBA-NABA USA super welterweight champion John ?The Phenom? Vera defends his title against Milorad Zizic in a 8 round contest.
The venue is located at 200 South Street, downtown Las Vegas and ticket prices start at 14.99; available online and at the venue box-office.

Quick Report: Top Rank Boxing hosted a press conference/luncheon on Tuesday September 27 to publicize their Pacquiao/Vargas PPV event on November 5 the Thomas & Mack Center in Vegas. The presser was held at the Conga room in LA and an inside source told me the number of plates served was 100. Attendees included the following fighters: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire, his challenger Jessie Magdaleno, WBO featherweight champion Oscar Valdez and flyweight contender Zou Shiming. Ticket sales for the show is? brisk? and prices start at $50.00. The suggested retail price for the PPV is $59.99. We are uncertain which Phoenix sports bars are going to show the event. We suggest fans call around to get the best price. Normally there is a cover charge or a minimum food or drink spend special explained as you enter the facility.

Iron Boy 35: Iron Boy Promotions is sending a sobering bulletin to boxers and their managers who want to book passage on Iron Boy?s October 29 card (IB-35) in Tolleson, Arizona at the Veteran?s Park. The dispatched message tells boxers ?pay your way on the card.? A spokesperson for the promotional company said the show is free to the public and Iron Boy will foot the bill for the Main and Co-Main bouts; but the under card performers must find sponsors to write their performance checks. This revelation will probably reduce the number of previously 10-12 planned bouts to 6-8 matches. Matchmaker Mike Sanchez is working on the card. In the main event, Carlos Castro (16-0) fights for a title and proceeds from beer sales go towards helping VFW in Tolleson buy land and build a facility for its? 500 members. It is a day of boxing with amateurs putting on a show stating at Noon and the pros go at beginning at 6 p.m. Once again, admission is free and the park is located at 85th Avenue & Van Buren in Tolleson.

Boxing Jabs: Arizona amateur heavyweight Dante Stone has decided to turn professional and is seeking a bout to make his debut. Stone has some skills; but, our concern is his conditioning and dedication to the sport. In the heavyweight division (dominated by giants) size matters, but, so does discipline and dedication and Stone needs to address those issues before he becomes a successful heavyweight; we wish him the best??.. Juan Estrada has been named to succeed Matthew Valenzuela as Executive Director of the Arizona Boxing Commission. Very little is known about Estrada other than the fact that the new appointee was an associate of the departed Director who took a position with the UFC in Las Vegas. Estrada will be introduced a the monthly commission meeting on Thursday, September 29 and if our schedule permits, we will try to talk to the new director and get a take on his agenda??Arizona lightweight Cesar Alan Valenzuela upped his record to 13-4-1 with a split decision victory over previously undefeated Dennis Galarza ((13-1) in the Co-Main event held in Pojoque New Mexico on Tuesday September 27 at the Buffalo Thunder Casino. His supporters el us the fight wasn?t close. Premier Boxing Championship was the promoter on record and rumors continue to swirl that the promotional company is battling financial woes. In the main event (televised by FS1) welterweight contender Yordenis Ugas (17-3) knocked out Bryant Perrella (14-1) in front of a sold out crowd.

More Short Jabs: Madison Boxing will host a smoker on Saturday 10/1 at the Greenfield Elementary School, 7009 S. 10th Street in Phoenix. 1st bout starts at 1 p.m.??.Copper Gloves at the Arizona State Fair ?October 19-20 in the Agricultural Barn area; 17th Avenue & McDowell Road entrance- 6 p.m. both nights.. ?. Phoenix middleweight Andrew ?Hurricane? Hernandez (15-4-1) backed out of a 9/30 fight in Mexico, one day before the weigh-in and the two promoters aren?t happy with the flamboyant boxer who turns 31 in December?. Undefeated junior welterweight Ivan Baranchyk (12-0-10 knockouts) suffered a small cut in his unanimous victory over Zhimin Wang (7-1) on 9/23. I talked to Rory Donadio (his manager) who told me the cut was minor and required only 3 stitches and shouldn?t interrupt his boxing agenda. Donadio knew nothing about rumors pitting his fighter against Arizona welterweight Abel Ramos (17-1-2) in November on Showtime?.No word on whether or not Maritza Saenz (Bout Maker Boxing Promotions) will return to promoting boxing after failing to win the Democratic Party nomination in her quest to win a seat in the Arizona State Senate race against her stepmother?? Iron Boy MMA 3 is set for Saturday October 1 at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix; Doors open at 5 P.M?..Until Next Time!
