DARCHINYAN TO FIGHT CATUBAY FOR IBO SUPER FLYWEIGHT TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

Australia’s cocky Vic Darchinyan who suffered a stunning fifth round knockout against Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire last month is looking to avenge that embarrassing loss by fighting for the vacant IBO super flyweight title against former RP flyweight champion Federico Catubay.

The title fight is scheduled for October 20 in Sydney, Australia in a bout where the sportsnut.com site says the southpaw slugger “should have an easier time against the tiny (5’2”) Catibay who was stopped in three rounds by Darchinyan’s stablemate Hussein Hussein in 2005.”

However. Catubay’s manager Samson Gello-ani said Catubay who began training some two weeks ago is capable of pulling off an upset if he is in top shape. Gello-ani conceded that at times Catubay didn’t train hard and that was the problem.

Darchinyan suffered his first defeat against the classy Donaire whose father, Nonito Donaire Sr told us Saturday, that his son would be defending his title sometime in December but as of now didn’t know who the opponent was.

Catubay has a record of 20-13-3 with 10 knockouts while Darchinyan’s record is an impressive 28-1 with 22 knockouts. The wild-swinging Catubay is ranked No. 33 by the IBO and based on his showing in recent fights is not likely to cause any problems for the hard-hitting Australian.

Boxing agent Angelo Hyder has been quoted as saying that Darchinyan’s defeat to Donaire could be a blessing in disguise. Hyder said “I think you will see an improved Vic from this fight. He came to earth with a thud and realizes he can’t go out there and bowl everyone over.”

Darchinyan, after his loss to Donaire, claimed he wasn’t hurt and asked for a rematch at the super flyweight limit but Donaire said he would follow his manager, Cameron Dunkin’s wishes.

WBC founding secretary general Rudy Salud had earlier suggested that newly crowned WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa offer Darchinyan a title shot since the Australian had previously boasted he was ready to even fight Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao. However, Gello-ani said Darchinyan was not likely to accept Penalosa's challenge.
