OLISA STUNS WBC NO.1

PhilBoxing.com

Filipino flyweight Richard Olisa has scored a stunning second round stoppage over WBC No. 1 ranked super flyqweight Devid Lookmahanak in Phatthalung, Thailand.

Olisa hammered Devid, droppingn him twice in the second round forcing the referee to call a halt to the consternation of Thai boxing fans and officials who thought it would be an easy fight for the world title contender. The loss ruined the championship hopes of Devid who was scheduled to fight champion Cristian Mijares of Mexico for the title before the end of the year.

Julian Turner of the Bangkok Post said the defeat ended the Thai’s unbeaten 16 fight streak and “all the high hopes for the rising star disappeared when Devid was drilled to the canvas with a fierce uppercut and was out on his feet when he tried to continue. He was soon on the deck again from a left hook and the fight was waived off.”

The disappointment of Thai boxing officials and fans was understandable since the fight against Olisa was, as Turner reported, “ regarded as a routine defense” of his WBC-affiliated Asian Boxing Council belt. Devid had been named the Asian Boxing Council’s 2006 “Best Boxer” and had even received an award from Police General Kovit who is in the forefront of ABCO.

Olisa’s ring record was deceiving since it showed he had only six wins against eight losses and three draws when he entered the ring but the promoters overlooked the fact that Olisa had four KO’s in his six wins and that his first eleven fights were all in Indonesia where he won two, lost six with two technical draws and one draw.

In was only when Olisa returned to the Philippines that he turned his career around highlighted by his dramatic win over the world No.1. The title clash with Devid was Olisa’s sixth fight this year. He dropped a ten round unanimous decision to Richard Laano on February 8 on the Viva Sports weekly boxing show “The Main Event”, then scored a third round TKO over former Philippine flyweight champion Edgar Rodrigo on March 17, a split decision in ten rounds over Armando Casa on April 21 followed by a ninth round TKO over fancied Robert Lerio on June 1 before losing a twelve round unanimous decision to Denkaosan Kaovichit in a Pan Asia Boxing Association title fight last July 3.

Well known TV boxing analyst Moy Lainez said Olisa is “a good boxer if he trains” but has a tendency to slack off and take things easy which results in his poor condition and defeats in fights he could have won. This was also the observation of Mandaluyong Tiger City Gym owner and promoter Jay San Pedro who at one time managed the career of Olisa.
