TEPORA DROPS CAPANGPANGAN 4 TIMES EN ROUTE TO 1st ROUND STOPPAGE; DEMECILLO EDGES LAGOS

ARANETA WINS BY TKO IN 1; BARRIGA SCHOOLS MANANGQUIL IN PRO DEBUT

CEBU CITY ? Undefeated super bantamweight Jhack Tepora showed his awesome power as he sent Bryan Capangpangan to the canvas four times en route to a first round stoppage to retain his WBO Asia-Pacific Youth super bantamweight title at the Robinson's Galleria here Saturday night on Omega Pro-Sports International's second offering of the free-to-the-public Who's Next boxing series.

Tepora, of the Omega Gym, dropped Capangpangan (10-3-1, 7KO) to the canvas with a well-timed counter right cross to the chin as Capangpangan came in for the attack seconds after the opening bell. A left-right combo by Tepora dropped Capangpangan for the second time moments later and Tepora followed it up with a left straight to the head that dropped Capangpangan for the third time. Each time that Capangpangan hit the canvas, he was able to beat the referee's count but another punishing combination by Tepora dropped Capangpangan again for the 4th time and this time, Referee Tony Pesons didn't bother to count declaring Tepora winner by TKO. Time: 2:34 of the first round.

Tepora, ranked No. 11 by WBO, is now 18-0 with 13 knockouts while Capangpangan dropped to 10-3-1 with 7 knockouts.

Jhack Tepora retains his WBO Asia-Pacific Youth super bantamweight title.

In the co-main event, slugger Kenny Demecillo retained his WBF Asia-Pacific bantamweight title via split decision victory over Rambo Lagos of Bukidnon in a widely booed decision by the jampacked weekend mall crowd. Judge Edwin Barrientos had it 96-94 for Demecillo, Arnie Najera had it 96-94 for Demecillo and Atty. William Ma?us had it 96-94 for Lagos.

Demecillo and Lagos engaged in a phone-booth battle the whole night that sent the crowd at the edge of their seats and on their toes but Lagos, who was the more skillful boxer over the come-forward Demecillo, seemed to have the slight edge as he had more clean hits and had more accurate punches.

Lagos (R) connects with a right at Demecillo.

Demecillo wins by split decision over Lagos.

After a quiet opening two rounds where both boxers sized each other up, action exploded in the 3rd round where Demecillo walking down on Lagos by throwing left and right bombs to the head and body of Lagos with bad intention but Lagos stood his ground and deftly connected with his own powerful left and right counters. This type of back and forth action continued throughout the later rounds and at one point it seemed Lagos would wilt under Demecillo's pressure but in the 8th round, Lagos boxed beautifully and threw combinations that hit Demecillo almost at will messing up Demecillo's face with blood dripping from Demecillo's nose and eye-brow. People in the ringside murmured that the fight should be stopped to stop the punishment but it was only because of Demecillo's never-say-die attitude that he survived the round. In the final two rounds, it was Lagos's turn to fade and Demecillo, drawing from his last reserves pursued Lagos aiming for a knockout and there were moments where Lagos was wobbly and appeared ready to go down but he was able to survive and even had his moments as the fight came to a close.

Even though Demecillo took the last two rounds, it appeared that Lagos had built enough points in the early rounds to win by a narrow margin. Demecillo has improved his record to 11 wins, 3 losses and 2 draws while Lagos dropped to 8-2-2 with 5KO.

Christian Araneta (R) drops Charlie Cabilla.

Junior flyweight prospect Christian Araneta (12-0-0, 10KO) ends his match with Charlie Cabilla (14-19-4, 2KO) with a short left uppercut that hit the head of Cabilla at 1:38 of the first round. Cabilla stood up to beat the count but refused to continue to fight.

Mark Anthony Barriga (R) displays defensive prowess against Melvin Manangquil.

Philippine Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga, 23, displayed finnesse and great boxing skills to school Melvin Manangquil (1-2-2, 1KO) in his pro debut over six rounds in a junior flyweight bout and won by unanimous decision with scores of 59-55, 59-55 and 60-54.

Barriga deftly used the shoulder roll and quickness ala Floyd Mayweather Jr as he thwarted any offensive endeavor by the confused Manangquil. In return, southpaw Barriga potshot Managquil with his stinging right jabs and left straights and at times threw combinations that reddened Manangquil's face. It was evident though that Barriga was conservative with his punches and has yet to show his power but there is no doubt that Philippine pro boxing has now in its fold one of the finest boxers around in the mold of Gerry Pe?alosa and the left Zab Judah.

Other results:

Jimboy Haya (9-2-2, 6KO) TKO 3 Fabio Marfa (25-31-4, 12KO), 6 rounds junior flyweight. Veteran Marfa made the fight interesting as long as it lasted but once Marfa was hit with a solid punch in the head by Haya, he turned his back and quit.

Feljun Taneo (6-1-0, 3KO) wins by UD over Lenmar Prescillas (2-2-0, 1KO), 6 rounds bantamweight.

Tomjune Mangubat (5-0-0, 5KO) KO 3 Arnel Acebuque (4-6-0, 4KO), 6 rounds featherweight.

Mark Vicelles (3-0-0, 2KO) wins by UD over Jesrel Corabal (0-2-0, 0KO), 4 rounds junior flyweight.

Marjun Piencenvas (pro debut) KO 1 Rolien Getalada.
