IDOL REDUX

PhilBoxing.com

CEBU CITY ? ALA Promotions International has revived its 'IDOL' boxing shows / TV series which aim to develop boxing talents from the grassroots level, this was announced during Tuesday's press conference at St Mark's Hotel here hosted by ALA executives headed by its director for operations Jeana Alvarez.

Alvarez informed that three 'IDOL' shows are slated this year, on July 16, Oct. 1 and Dec. 3. The shows will be broadcast on ABS-CBN's Action Sports at Studio 23 with each show divided into two episodes.

The initial Idol show dubbed 'IDOL 1 Philippines vs Indonesia' was launched on Aug. 24, 2013 at the Big Square Arena in Escalante, Negros Occidental co-headlined by Melvin Gumban vs John Bajawa and Mark Bernaldez vs Marangin Marbun. The project however was temporarily shelved as ALA management was focusing on its international shows on the highly successful 'Pinoy Pride' series.

The July 16 card dubbed as 'IDOL 2' which will be held at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex, will be co-headlined by knockout artist Jeo Santisima and undefeated Melvin Jerusalem against yet to be named opponents.

Also tabbed to appear in succeeding shows are amateur standout and undefeated pro Kevin Jake Cataraja, WBO No. 9 ranked super bantamweight Jimmy Paypa and international campaigner Jonas Sultan.

Alvarez said that the IDOL series will compliment the bigger 'Pinoy Pride' shows as successful IDOL boxers will be eventually featured on 'Pinoy Pride'.

ALA Gym manager and matchmaker Edito Villamor said that the upcoming IDOL featured boxers have been fighting on the undercard of 'Pinoy Pride' series but ?some of these undercard matches could by themselves stand out as headliners in the smaller cards like the Santisima vs Demecillo and the Jerusalem vs Condes fights which will be much appreciated by the grassroots crowd.?

Villamor also added that they have contacted other boxing stables in the Visayas and Mindanao to participate in the IDOL boxing series in the hope of discovering new boxing talents to represent the country in the international arena in the future.

Back row (L-R): Jimmy Paypa, Melvin Jerusalem KJ Cataraja, Jeo Santisima and Jonas Sultan; front row (L-R): Trainer Michael Domingo, ALA execs Chelna Locaylocay, Jeana Alvarez and Leilani Perpetua, and Gym manager Edito Villamor.

Melvin Jerusalem (L) and Jeo Santisima (R) will co-headline Idol 2 on July 16 in Mandaue City.
