'WHO'S NEXT?': TEPORA STOPS TINAMPAY IN 5, CAPTURES WBO YOUTH ASIA PACIFIC TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

CEBU CITY ? Undefeated junior bantamweight prospect Jack Tepora showed mature boxing skills and lethal power by knocking out Jason Tinampay in the 5th round to capture the WBO Youth Asia-Pacific title in the first ever mall boxing here held at Atrium of the plush Robinson's Galleria that treated its huge Sunday evening crowd into a festive live boxing extravaganza in the first of Omega Pro-Sports' 'Who's Next' boxing series.

Tepora, 22, a Cebu native, and Tinampay, from Bohol, tried to measure each other out after the opening bell with Tepora staying at the center of the ring and cutting out Tinampay effectively which ended with a flurry by Tepora. In the second round, Tepora started working to the body of Tinampay and it was clear Tinampay was feeling the power of Tepora's punches. In the third round Tepora kept the pressure by throwing combinations upstairs but was caught by Tinampany with a lunging right to the head that Tepora. Tepora's good footwork neutralized Tinampay's lunging style and with his well-timed heavy punches, Tepora begun to dominate Tinampay the rest of the fight until finally, a flurry of head and body shots sent Tinampay down and out at 2:05 mark of the 5th round.

Tepora now upped his undefeated record to 17 wins with 12 knockouts while Tinampany suffered his 3rd defeat in 10 fights.

In the co-main event at 10 rounds junior flyweight, Vergilio Silvano won by unanimous decision over Fernando Ocon in a war of attrition with scores of 96-94, 96-94 and 97-93.

Silvano took the early rounds by being the busier fighter but Ocon dominated the middle rounds. Silvano however came back strong in rounds 9 and 10 as Ocon faded away, getting the nod of the judges. Silvano has now improved his record to 21-6-1 with 12 knockouts while Ocon dropped to 13-11-1, 5KO).

In highly entertaining 8 rounds featherweight bout, Jerry Castroverde (8-2, 4KO) edged Ryan Quimbo (4-12-1). Castroverde worked with a beautiful jab in the early rounds to control the fight but Quimbo scored with wicked counters in the 4th and 5th rounds transforming the fight into a slugfest. Eventually Castroverde prevailed in a majority decision win with scores of 77-75, 76-76 and 78-74.
