PONGSAKLEK LOSES WBC CROWN TO NAITO!
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Wed, 18 Jul 2007
Thailand's most protected boxer just got exposed in Japan.
In an exciting showdown, Pongsaklek Wongjongkam of Thailand lost his WBC flyweight title with a decision loss to Japanese Daisuke Naito a few minutes ago at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
Both fighters suffered cuts in the fight, although Naito proved to be stronger down the stretch.
Judges Bruce McTavish and Stephen Blea both scored the bout 116-113 while Hubert Minn saw it 115-113 all for the now champion Naito, who had previously lost twice to Wongjongkam.
GAB Chairman Eric Buhain, who supervised the fight, said: "It was a great fight. Both fighters gave all their best. Naito just seems to be more prepared physically. His power was there in the last three rounds. Pongsaklek is a true WBC champion before, during and after the fight!"
With this loss, Wongjongkam loses the chance for a possible unification duel with IBF flyweight champ Nonito Donaire of the Philippines.
Naito, who trained at the ALA Gym for his past fights, improves to 30 wins with 2 losses, while Pongsaklek, who absorbed his first loss since 1996, slides to 65 wins, 3 losses.
