By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 16 Jul 2007
Newly crowned Philippine minimum weight champion Denver Cuello gets a crack at the WBC Youth title currently held by Thailand’s Wanheng Menayothin on July 31 in Ketjontong, Thailand.
The talented young fighter from the Aljoe Jaro stable won the Philippine title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Arman dela Cruz in Binangonan, Rizal last July 7. Prior to the title fight Cuello strung up three successive knockouts this year to earn the title shot against dela Cruz.
On February 17 Cuello scored a third round KO over Steve Dimaisip and followed this up with a first round TKO over Carlo Besares last Aprul 4 before hammering Fabio Marfa into submission in two rounds on June 1.
The champion Menayothin made his professional debut only on January 26 when he scored a six round unanimous decision over Roel Gade of the Philippines. He then scored an eight round unanimous decision over Danny Linasa last February 23. Linasa hadn’t won a fight in 12 outings losing 10 by KO or TKO. Menayothin then went on to win the vacant WBC Youth title with a first round TKO over China’s Ma Wi Ming on March 30. According to boxrec.com Menyothin has a recod of 3-0 with 1 knockout.
Based on his record and the caliber of the fighters he has beaten, Cuello is expected to win the WBC Youth title and give the Philippines one more regional crown.
