ROY JONES JR BACK, WANTS TRINIDAD NEXT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 15 Jul 2007 Former world light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr returned after an absence of almost one year from the ring to hammer out a unanimous twelve round decision over previously undefeated Tony Hanshaw at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. All three judges had Jones who scored his second straight victory the winner by margins of 114-113, 117-110 and 118-109. Jones improved to 51-4, 38 KO's while Hanshaw dropped to 21-1-1 wuth 14 KO's. Mark Vester of the respected boxing site boxingscene.com said the fight was “entertaining at times.” He said Jones dropped Hanshaw in the eleventh round and although Handshaw tried to pound Jones against the ropes, the former multi-titled world champion used a very tight defense to block the punches. Jones clearly connected with the cleaner punches while the knockdown he scored was off a cracking counter left hook off the ropes. Vester reported that now the serious talk about a Jones-Tito Trinidad fight can begin after the Puerto Rican idol said he would return to the ring in January next year and wanted Jones as his opponent. The Jones-Hanshaw fight also witnessed the return of international promoter Murad Muhammad who promoted Roy Jones Jr’s fights for many years and was regarded as a close friend of the champion into big-time boxing promotions. Murad who helped Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao get his first title shot against IBF super bantamweight champion Lelhonolo Ledwaba and steered Pacquiao’s career all the way upto his first fight with legendary Mexican Erik “El Terrible” Morales parted ways with Pacquiao following an out-of-court settlement of a case filed against Murad by Pacquiao.
