NBA -- Walker scores 52 points, Hornets escape Jazz in double OT

PhilBoxing.com

CHARLOTTE --- It was a match between two teams with identical win-loss recorda, both desperate for a victory to keep themselves in the playoff hunt.

Unfortunately, only one walked away a winner and it took an extra 10 minutes to settle the issue.

Kemba Walker dropped 52 points to set a career high and franchise record as the Charlotte Hornets edged out the resilient Utah Jazz in double overtime, 124-119.

Walker had 18 points in the first quarter and just kept going. He finished with 16-of-34 field goals including 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. He barely missed a triple double with 9 rebounds and 8 assists. The ace point guard made 14-of-15 free throws including four in the dying seconds of the second overtime to seal the victory.

"I thought our guards just didn't compete against him early and he took advantage of it." Jazz head coach Quin Snyder said. "We did a better job on him as the game went on, but he's one of those guys that can score even when you defend him well."

"I just tried to make the best plays possible, whatever the defense gives me. When I had my shot, I tried to be aggressive, take them and make them." Walker said.

Despite trailing most of the game, the Jazz had their chances to emerge victorious. Led by Gordon Hayward, they overcame a 15 point third quarter deficit and even took the lead late in the fourth period.

Trey Burke forced the game into the first overtime by sinking a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left in regulation. Walker missed the potential game winner in the ensuing play as time expired.

With the Hornets leading 108-103 in the first overtime and 22 seconds left, Joe Ingles hit a triple to cut the lead to two. Rookie Frank Kaminsky then made a weak inbound pass which was stolen by Hayward that led to a Rudy Gobert dunk to force another overtime.

In the second overtime, Walker scored 9 points and the Hornets led as much as six and Jazz could no longer keep up and they started to foul. Cody Zeller and Walker each made four free throws to end any hopes for the Jazz.

Asked if this was the best game he has ever played, Walker replied "Most points I've scored? yes. Best game? No. I've definitely had better games, more complete games on both ends of the floor. Tonight offensively, I was great but I could have been better in defense."

Hayward who finished with a season high 36 points said "I got some good looks tonight and I was able to knock some down. But I didn't make enough to win the game. We made the right plays to stay in the game and to give ourselves a chance, something we can be proud of."

Marvin Williams scored 19 points, Kaminsky added 17 and Zeller had 14 points for the 19-22 Hornets.

Trey Burke tallied 25 points while Rudy Gobert had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Jazz who dropped to 18-23.
