'Boxing Prodigy' David Benavidez to Become Youngest Fighter to Ever Appear on ShoBox Tonight

PhilBoxing.com

18-year-old boxing prodigy David "El Bandera Roja" Benavidez will set a record tonight as the youngest fighter to ever appear on ShoBox: The New Generation (10:45 p.m. ET/7:45 p.m. PT), live from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Benavidez (10-0, 9 KOs) of Phoenix, Ariz., will face Felipe Romero (15-9-1, 9 KOs), of La Paz, Mexico, in an eight-round matchup to open a SHOWTIME tripleheader, headlined by a 10-round junior middleweight match-up between Frank Galarza (17-0-2, 11 KOs), of Brooklyn and Jarrett Hurd (16-0, 10 KOs), of Accokeek, Maryland.

Former Ukrainian Olympian Sergiy Derevyanchenko (6-0, 4 KOs, WSOB: 23-1, 7 KOs) faces Jessie Nicklow (25-7-3, 8 KOs) in the eight-round super middleweight co-feature.

Benavidez is known as "El Badera Roja" (The Red Flag), meant as a warning to the world's super middleweights that he has arrived.

"Tonight it begins," said his promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing.
"David Benavidez will show the world he is the next superstar of boxing. Even at 18, he was too strong for amateur boxing. He already fights like a grown man and now the world will see."

Romero will be no easy mark for Benavidez. In his 10-year career spanning from super middleweight to heavyweight, Romero has notched a pair of victories over former top contender Julio Cesar Gonzalez and lasted nine rounds against current cruiserweight champion Krzysztof Glowacki.

"We wanted an opponent who was tough to show what David can do," continued Lewkowicz. "Romero has gone the distance with heavyweight contenders, so when David destroys him, it will send up the red flag to boxing that he is taking over."

Benavidez is the younger brother of undefeated Interim WBA World Super Lightweight Champion Jose Benavidez Jr. and is trained by his father Jose Benavidez Sr.
