NIETES IN GREAT SHAPE AFTER SPARRING THIS WEEK

PhilBoxing.com

The longest reigning Filipino world champion, WBO light flyweight king Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes is looking in great shape after sparring a total of 18 rounds this past week at the famed ALA Gym in Cebu.

His trainer Edmund Villamor informed the New Standard/boxingmirror.com that Nietes sparred with bantamweight Vergel Viktor and promising newcomer Kevin Cataraja and emphasized ?he is ready.?

Nietes is scheduled to have an appointment at the US embassy in Manila on September 23 to obtain his H1 visa after which he and Villamor will leave for Los Angeles on the 25th where he plans to spar with two division world champion Brian Viloria.

Villamor said he is ?ready to spar continuously? at the Wild Card Gym following his arrival in Los Angeles where the Pagara brothers Jason and Prince Albert have been training along with Mark ?Magnifico? Magsayo.

Viloria?s manager Gary Gittelsohn told us that Viloria?s longtime friend and trainer Ruben Gomez had made arrangements with Edito ?Ala? Villamor who is in LA to begin sparring on the 17th ?for their mutual benefit? since both Nietes and Viloria have scheduled title fights on October 17 and since they hadn?t learned of Nietes? whereabouts he has ?prepared a contingency schedule with other sparring partners.?

Nietes is scheduled to defend his title against Mexican champion Juan ?Pinky? Alejo at the StubHub Center in Carson City, California in ALA Promotions inaugural presentation in the United States alongside the Pagara brothers Jason and Prince Albert and Mark ?Magnifico? Magsayo on October 17.

Nietes who has a record of 36-1-4 with 21 knockouts will be making his eighth title defense against Alejo who has a record of 21-3 with 13 knockouts and is ranked No. 7 by the WBO.

Alejo won the Meican title with an 11th eround TKO of Jose Guadalupe Martinez on August 20, 2014 and is coming off a twen round split decision win over Jose Rivas last May 27.

Alejo also scored 2nd round TKO victories over Erik Ramirez in September and October 2013. Ramirez was a challenger to Nietes and lost by a twelve round unanimous decision in his hometown of Oaxaca on February 28, 2009 after being dropped in rounds 1, 5, 9 and 12.
