AMONSOT GETS WORLD TITLE SHOT

PhilBoxing.com

WBO Asia Pacific lightweight champion Czar Amonsot gets a big break when he fights WBO champion Michael Katsidis of Australia on the undercard of the spectacular Golden Boy Promotions fight card featuring Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins against Winky Wright at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on July 21.

Respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer of the famed ALA Gym said he received a call early Tuesday offering Amonsot the title shot which the talented southpaw was excited about accepting. His purse will be $30,000.

Aldeguer said the undefeated Katisidis who has a record of 22-0 with 20 knockouts is “a heavy puncher” but believes that Amonsot who has been training for a July 7 title defense of his WBO Asia Pacific crown and was slated to fight in the August 11 Philippines-Mexico World Cup has “a very good chance and is in excellent shape.” He said Amonsot who was ejected from the ALA Gym as a disciplinary measure and lost his title to Simon Butar Butar by a first round KO when he didn’t train and failed to look after himself had changed completely and had “no weight problems, no family problems and no problems at all.”

Amonsot, the 21 year old southpaw has a record of 18-2-1 with 10 knockouts and is coming off a split decision win over South Korea’s Da Woo Jung where he captured the WBO Asia Pacific lightweight title in a fight telecast by Viva Sports over its top-rated weekly boxing show the “Main Event” sponsored by Tanduay, the No.1 Rhum, Pagcor and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.

Katisidis has scored fifth round TKO wins over Filipinos Nonoy Gonzales last Mach 3, 2006 and before that against Ranee Ganoy on August 19, 2005 when Ganoy who is based in Sydney, Australia was short on preparation. Katsidis won the world interim title last February 17 when Graham Earl retired in the fifth round.

Ganoy who arrived in Manila last Sunday to visit his mother who is scheduled to undergo an operation, successfully defended his IBF Asia Pacific lightweight title with a lopsided twelve round decision over durable Indonesian challenger Joey DiRicardo last Friday in Brisbane. Ganoy who has scored five straight KO wins since the Kastidis fight won the IBF regional title with a stunning eighth round KO of former IBF world chamnpion Robbie Peden who had also fought then WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera and dropped a unanimous decision.
