MAYWEATHER CAMP HAS COCKY RETORT TO BEING STRIPPED OF WBO WELTERWEIGHT TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

The camp of undefeated pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr doesn?t seem to care about his being stripped of the WBO welterweight title and in fact has had what the New York Post?s Justin Terranova describes as a ?cocky retort.?

After being stripped of his WBO belt after refusing to relinquish it which he won in the ?Fight of the Century? against eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao and failing to pay the WBO the $200,000 sanction fee the reaction of Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe was what one would expect from the camp of the arrogant and abrasive undefeated world champion who won immediate support from World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman who continues to recognize Mayweather as the WBC welterweight and super welterweight champion which he also shares with the WBA.

While it is not known whether Mayweather will defend one of his world titles in his planned September 12 bout in Las Vegas, Sulaiman confirmed that Mayweather remains the WBC?s welterweight and junior middleweight champion.

Sulaiman said ?Floyd is an integral part of bthe WBC, has been champion fior 17 years in five different weight divisions and is the fighter of the moment.?

The WBC president stated that Mayweather ?has spent several years in both divisions and we are waiting for him and the September 12 fight.?

Ellerbee told ESPN.com ?Floyd will decide what, or if any, actions he will take. But in the meantime he?s enjoying a couple of hundred millions he made from his last outing (against Pacquiao) and has zero impact on anything he does.?

In an effort to soften the critical comments Ellerbee said that Mayweather ?has a great deal of respect for each and evey organization, as he has always had in his 19 year career, but he wioll not be dictated to by any organization or person as it relates to his decision-making.?

The WBO accommodated Mayweather when he asked for time to make a decision but when the Friday deadline to pay a $200,000 sanction fee for the Pacquiao fight and to relinquish his two junior middleweight titles Mayweather effectively ignored the deadline and let it pass.

The WBO in fact gave Mayweather two months to decide unlike the WBC and WBA who set aside the rule that fighters are not allowed to hold belts in multiple weight divisions for more than ten days and made an exception in the case of Mayweather.

Mayweather got himself into a bind when in the Pacquiao post-fight press conference he stated he would give up his belts and allow younger fighters to have a crack at becoming world champions. Mayweather said then ?I don?t know whether it will be Monday, May 4 or maybe a couple of weeks. I?ll talk to my team and see what we need to do. Other fighters need a chance. Give other fighters a chance. I?m not greedy. I?m a world champion in two different weight classes . Its time to let other fighters fight for the belt.

Ellerbee indicated that Mayweather is considering legal action, claiming that ?we have the best attorney om the game, John Hornewer and we are fully aware of what our rights are. Floyd will decide what he wants to do.?
